A silver-gilt fragment, possibly from a late Anglo-Saxon disc brooch. The fragment can be read as part of an animal with only the front leg, shoulder and curve at the junction of the neck and back remaining. A strand of interlace can be seen running behind the possible raised front leg which ends against a simple frame. The animal is rendered freely in a style reminiscent of the chip carving of the early Anglo Saxon period. All edges apart from the one delineating the lower part of the neck and back are torn. The width of the fragment is 15mm.

Fragment of a copper alloy cruciform brooch. Only the headplate survives. The headplate is rectangular and is divided into three smaller rectangles. There are two integrally cast half-rounded collared knops surrounding the headplate. One is missing. The brooch is broken at the very top of the bow. On the reverse is an integral copper alloy lug for the pin. All that remains of the pin is a mass of iron corrosion surrounding the lug. The surface of the brooch is pitted and has many patches of active bronze disease.

An incomplete and damaged lead alloy late Anglo-Saxon nummular brooch, two adjoining parts of which survive. Both of these are bent and distorted and will be discussed together. The brooch would have originally have been circular in shape and now measures circa 36mm in diameter. The original diameter is likely to have been larger as the surviving edges of the brooch are now bent backwards, reducing its present diameter. The front face is decorated with five concentric rings of pellets around an unclear central motif which is circular in outline and may have had a cross within it …

The head and bow of a small square-headed brooch with chip-carved ornament on the headplate. The small square headed brooches are not treated at length by Dr Hines in Corpus of the Great Square-headed brooches, though they are typologically related to them. McGregor and Bolick illustrate several (p.120-124) from the Ashmolean collections, some from the south Fen cemeteries of Cambridgeshire, though perhaps the closest to the present example are the pair from Freckenham, illustrated by West Pl II.4 and p.40, accessioned to the Cambridge archaeological departmental Museum in 1892. These…

The right-hand (sinister) lobe and part of the empanelled ornamental footplate of a gilt bronze square-headed brooch of sixth century date and East Anglian manufacture, of Hines' Class XVI. The fragment is but 21mm wide, 18mm high and 2.2mm thick, but the surviving detail is sufficient for a confident attribution to that group. The outer edges of the lobe are abraded, but it was evidently raised and coated with silver sheet which is now lost from the metal surface, except for one tiny spot near the lower edge. The empanelled ornament includes the ends of two panels of guilloche which …

A small fragment of a gilt copper alloy brooch, probably of Early Medieval date, probably Anglo Saxon. Unfortunately not enough of the brooch survives to determine the type or date, the brooch is represented by a head fragment only. The rear of the brooch has twin lugs 8mm apart. The front carries incised decoration. Three concentric circles were positioned around a central aperture. Above the engraved circles are two facing arcs, which have a linear incised line at the apex. Gilding survives inside the engraved lines. All edges apart from an arc for the central opening are broken. The…

A fragment of a copper alloy Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, dating to the fifth or sixth centuries AD. The fragment comprises the foot of the brooch which is zoomorphic in form. The eyes and nostrils of the animal, likely to be a horse are picked out as moulded raised decoration. On the underside of the fragment, there is a scar marking the position of the catchplate which does not survive. The fragment measures 27mm in length and 18mm in width. It is poorly preserved with a green patina and is flaking in places.

Two fragments of an elaborate early Anglo-Saxon great square-headed brooch made from gilded copper alloy and dating to the mid sixth century AD. One fragment comprises the majority of the headplate, of which the borders are corroded and missing. The headplate is highly decorated, with an outermost border of Style I relief zoomorphic decoration. The eyes and feet of two stylised animals facing each other are visible. Within this border is a broad raised strip running around three sides of a rectangle, decorated with a row of very small stamped ring-and-dot motifs; and within this is a …

Incomplete knob, probably a top knob, of a Group V florid cruciform (29mm x 17mm). Only one short length of the outer edge is original, the rest being broken away, as are the sides and inner edge where the knob would have joined the headplate. Thus none of the florid animal ornament is present. The short sides of a rectangular panel next to the junction are also intact. All breaks are ancient. Punched annulets follow the edges of the moulding that flares to the outer edge. The very distinctive rectangular panel can be compared with those on a brooch from Sleaford (Aberg 1926, fig. 84)…

Setting from an Anglo-Saxon composite disc brooch. The setting appears to consist of a dome of white material, with a band of gold ropework running around its diameter. Four strips of gold ropework run from this band up towards the centre of the dome, which has a circular setting of similar ropework, which may have formed a setting for a gem stone (now missing). This object has been identified from a photograph only, but clearly represents a central setting of Avent's Class 4 (Avent 1975). Similar central settings occur on composite disc brooches from Milton, Monkton, Sarre and Favers…
