A fragment of an early medieval silver penny of Lunettes type dating c.AD852-74/6, probably of Burgred of Mercia (852-874), reverse type a, mint: London (North 423). Ref: North 1994: 100. The coin only survives as a small fragment with uneven, irregular edges which may reflect post-depositional damage rather than fragmentation prior to burial. Not enough of coin to measure diameter. An important and unusual find of an 8th century, silver Anglo Saxon sceat of 'monitascorum' type. Normally this type has 'MONITA SCORVM' on the obverse, but in this case has the 'DE LVNDONIA' inscription of series L instead. Michael Metcalf, Thrymsas and Sceattas' (Oxford, 1993), p. 435 noted one other specimen of this variant at the time of publication, which he described as a 'unique and highly interesting coin'. If the inscriptions are taken at face value this is an ecclesiastical issue ('Moneta Sanctorum') from London, presumably issued for a bishop of London. The coin recorded…

A lead Early Tudor token (c.1490-1545). These tokens were usually a lead, tin, pewter alloy (Mitchiner and Skinner 1984:102). The token probably belongs to the Tau Cross type, although the reverse is plain. The obverse has a plain cross in a circle with an oblique anti-clockwise ray border. It is similar to no. 13 plate 6 pg. 147 in Mitchiner and Skinner "Early Tudor Tokens c.1425-1672" British Numismatic Journal vol. 54 1984, although there are wider spaces between the rays in the border. All the tokens featured in this article have a London provenance. It is likely this token a…
