A Medieval iron axe head (10th - 13th century). The width of the axe head expands from the butt (width: 50.19mm) to the curved cutting edge (width: 88.57mm). The upper edge is straight but the lower edge curves downwards. In the centre on one side a makers mark has been stamped. The mark is a cross where the length is twice the width of the arms. It is arranged so that the long arm of the cross is aligned along the length of the axe head. The axe head is broken across the vertical perforation for attachment on the butt, ?broken in antiquity. It is similar to woodworking axes (10t…

Whittle tanged iron knife, length 88mm, width 19mm, thickness 5mm. Remains of the rectangular cross section tang survive, 11mm long, 14mm wide, thickness 6mm. The back of the knife is stepped by 5mm, the back is approximately 3mm wide, the tip is missing. Most of the blade has corroded away, leaving an uneven edge. The reason the blade may have been affected by corrosion so much more so than the rest of the knife is probably because the knife is made of iron whilst the blade may have had a higher carbon content (ie steel), the carbon in the iron helps to facilitate corrosion. …

Whittle tanged iron knife, surviving length 78mm, width 25mm thickness 5mm. Remains of the rectangular sectioned tang at one end, 26mm long, 12mm wide, thickness 5mm. From the tang the blade expands, the lower edge more steeply angled than the upper. The back is almost straight but angles slightly downwards, the cutting edge rises upwards at an angle to meet at the point. The end of the blade is missing and is only 50mm long, but judging by the angle of the blade, it may have been approximately 110mm long. Because the knife is so corroded it is difficult to give an exact date b…

Anglo-Norse sword (Peterson Type L) with total surviving length of c400mm measured from the tip of the hilt to the end of the broken blade, which is approximately c3mm thick. The blade measures c60mm wide at the hilt and tapers to a width of c45mm at the blade break. The three-part hilt is formed from two opposing, outwardly swept quillons of roughly square section, which each measuring c10mm thick and c90mm to 93mm in length. The hilt grip bar is slightly oblong in section, measuring c10mm thick and c15mm wide. The exposed length of the grip bar is c80mm. No handle or pommel fittings…

A fragment of an iron spear head [Swanton's Type H3] dating to the early Early medieval period. The fragment is lozengiform in section and comprises a portion of the blade nearest to the socket. The spearhead expands and then tapers to a point, which is missing. It measures 132mm in length, a maximum of 49mm in width and has a thickness of 7mm. It is similar to examples known from Graves 28 and 36, Edix Hill, Barrington. (Malim and Hines, 1998)

An iron socketed spearhead of broadly medieval date. Though corroded, the artefact survives relatively well and the angular blade shape can be clearly discerned. The blade turns in after 115-120mm at an angle of approximately 140 degrees. Beyond the blade tapers to a width of 14.3mm at its junction with the socket. The blade is flat with a shallow lozengiform section. The socket expands to a hollow circular section of diameter 24.3mm over a length of 100mm. The socket is broken at its terminal across 13.6mm. If this socket was once split, a trait indicative of an Anglo- Saxon date, th…

Nearly complete iron spear head. The spear head is socketed, open and and tapers to the blade. The socket terminal is damaged. The blade is lozenge shaped in cross-section and has wide shoulders tapering to the tip. The blade is slightly bowed above the shoulders and the tip has been bent over and now points down towards the socket. The bends have patinated breaks and appear to have been done intentionally rather than the result of accidental damage. The external diameter of the socket is 16mm. The blade length is approximately 225mm in total, and 5mm thick, although some of th…

Single edged iron blade, with angled back and remains of tang surviving. In general form this artefact is similar to a large knife or small seax of the early Anglo-Saxon period but this may be coincidental; the bulk of the object is suggestive of a later date, and indeed this may be some form of agricultural item rather than a knife.

Incomplete probable harness ring. The object consists of an solid oval-sectioned iron ring with bronze casing, which has split as the iron has expanded due to corrosion. This splitting is visible along the internal and external line of the ring, which obscures the details regarding whether the copper alloy casing was U-shaped and hammered round, or a complete cylinder. The external surface of the bronze casing is decorated with transverse ribbing. The object is similar to a simple terret ring found with two other probable harness rings and two terret rings in a context dating to circa…

Possible iron ring-headed pin with bent ring-head. The terminal of the ring-head has not been moulded onto the stem and this might betray its early date. Considering the not too much corroded state it might be medieval, although the earliest ring-headed pin start in Hallstatt D (Early Iron Age) and this specimen would be of the right shape and length for a period as early as that.

Iron axehead, possibly Late Iron Age but more likely Post-Medieval or modern. If it did date from the LIA, it would be a very rare Lancashire find indeed. The object is heavily corroded, but the socket and blade are still readily recognisable. Early Iron Age axes were made from forged, not wrought iron and it was difficult to form whole 'sockets' as were known from LBA socketed axes. For iron axes like this the wings needed to be reheated and hammered into the required shape. However, iron axes like this survive only very rarely and since post medieval and some modern tools apply this …

Slim late medieval iron woodmen's axe. The axe weighs more than 300gr and it is 170mm long and has a relatively short blade of 62mm length. At its thickest point near the shaft hole is it 200mm thick, but it narrows down to the cutting edge which is in its corroded state ca. 2mm thick. The straight wooden shaft would have been inserted and fitten through an almost triangular hole of 28 by 20mm at the rear end of the axe, at a right angle to the axehead itself.
