Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete low flanged bronze (unanalysed) axehead, with a 'brassy' appearance, perhaps due to a high tin content, it measures 169mm in length, 92mm in width across its cutting edge and a maximum thickness of 12mm. It is thin and narrow with a slightly arched butt. The sides curve gently to a flared blade. Both faces are slightly dished in cross-section. It has low lateral flanges with slightly convex sides. There is a slight edge bevel and a very slight 'stop' bevel though the longitudinal cross-section remains relatively elliptical. Both faces are decorated with repe…

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A bronze fragment from the blade end of a small socketed axehead or chisel. There is some surface survival but much is lost due to corrosion and erosion. All the edges are eroded and relatively rounded. It is patinated dark green, including the breaks, which suggests that the breaks are ancient. The commplete width of the cutting edge survives and the socket extends to 9mm from blade edge. It measures 18mm in length and 36mm in width. This probable axe is late Bronze Age in date.

A barbed and tanged flint arrowhead with a recent break on the tang exposing a medium-dark grey flint. Another small 'recent' chip occurs on one side of the arrowhead. A small part of the tip is also missing but this is an ancient (patinated) break. The arrowhead is patinated blue white but curiously only over part of the surface. Interestingly the areas of unpatinated surface, which are black, appear to be limited to the central and base areas of the arrowhead and suggest a possible haft/adhesive mark. Such an occurrance is extremely rare; Green (1980) cited only 15 examples of f…

A copper-alloy fragment of an unidentified object the function and date of which are also unknown. The fragment is curvilinear and rectangular in plan measuring 25mm in length and 18mm in width, the curvilinear outer edges appear to be original and the other two edges are incomplete due to old breaks. One face has a central longitudinal ridge and the other has a central longitudinal concave band. No parallel could be found for this object especially as it is so fragmentary.

Almost complete copper alloy Bronze Age flanged axe. The axe is in generally poor condition. It is subrectangular in plan and an elongated lentoid in profile. It flares gently at the blade end and the cutting edge is missing. The exposed edge is now heavily worn, chipped and pitted. The blade points are also worn down and the surfaces are similarly heavily abraded and chipped. When viewed in plan, the body of the axe is of equal width along its length. The butt of the axe is damaged with a rough diagonal break across one corner. The flanges of the axe are heavily worn. They rise above …

Complete cast copper alloy ‘south western’ type late Middle Bronze Age palstave axe. The back portion of the axe has a septum that is rectangular in plan with a pronounced backstop. The side flanges are high, and at their highest point rise fractionally past the backstop, along the axe’s length. The flanges then angle down sharply towards the rear of the axe and reach the septum at a point just before the butt, typical of this variant. This gives the back portion of the axe a sharply wedge shaped profile. The butt of the axe is slightly chipped and worn. The blade of the axe is r…

Possibly Late Bronze Age and possibly Romano-British heavy cast ring. In section the inner surface is rounded and the external carinated. Internal diameter 6mm, external diameter 15mm, thickness 5mm. Perhaps used as a bead. This example is not very similar to Late Bronze Age examples from Fengate (Coombs in Pryor 2001, 291, fig.10.10) or Blackmoor (Colquhoun 1979, 109, fig.4.4), nor does it resemble any in the large series of Romano-British rings from Uley (Woodward and Leach 1993, 135-40).
