Object type: COIN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Medieval silver penny of William I the Lion of Scotland. Dating from 1195 to 1214. The coin is quite worn on both sides. Scottish pennies were of the same quality as English pennies in this period. Their designs are similar to the contemporary English ones except that Scottish pennies, as with this example, have a profile rather than a bust, and the reverse has a star in each quadrant of the cross.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Published
A copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The mount is cut from a very thin piece of metal. It appears to take the form of a highly stylised canine face, either a fox or a wolf. The eyes are formed from two openwork sub-triangles. Sub-rectangular knopped ears are located to either side of an angular band that runs horizontally above the eyes. The muzzle is formed as the general sub-triangular form of the mount reaches its apex. The angular form of the object is unusual and no parallel for the artefact has yet been found. Its date is therefore uncertain.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small cast copper-alloy Colchester-derivative Roman brooch. This example is incomplete, with the pin, pin-bar, spring, and elements of the wings and catchplate now missing. It is probably a Colchester type two-piece example given the doubly perforated lug on the brooch head, its profile, and the slightness of the wings. Overall the brooch is 32.0mm in length, while the bow rises to 15.5mm in maximum height. The catchplate is 4.9mm in length and has been considerably abraded. The catchplate is seemingly solid, that is it lacks decorative perforations. The bow is sub-oval in sect…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Hod Hill brooch. An example of Hull's type 61/Hattatt's Class B as there are side knobs located at the base of the bow. The brooch has suffered damage to its pin, of which only 10.2mm now survives following an old break. Further, elements have also been abraded away from the catchplate, head and the right obverse side of the bow. In profile the brooch can be described as 'harp-shaped' in that the arch of the bow is not continuous down to the foot. The catchplate extends a full 25.0mm up the reverse of the leg. The leg itself is triangular in …

Object type: SPUR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A late Roman cast copper-alloy prick spur. The spur is short and incomplete. The artefact is the remains of one of the arms, and an elaborate terminal above and below where the prick would once have protruded. The remaining arm is triangular in section before expanding to become trapezoidal just before the elaborate plate for the prick. Iron corrosion is prevalent on the reverse of this prick plate, as a result of corrosion of the iron prick. The spur is broken beyond this plate, but there would have originally been a further arm, which would have terminated as it does on the remaining…

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Published
A worn fragment of a cast copper-alloy flat ring terret of late Iron Age to Roman date (1st century AD). The fragment is sub-rectangular both in shape and section; the shallow nature of the curve suggests quite a sizeable hoop. The inner edge of the fragment, at 7.3mm thick, is considerably thicker than the outer edge at 4.1mm. Terret ringss were used as rein guides, although there is no obvious associated wear on this fragmentary example. However, it could be that a large example, of which this fragment may have formed part, would not have been used for such a purpose. As with flat …

A copper-alloy buckle frame from the Medieval period. The frame is oval with a forked spacer for a composite plate, which is missing. The frame is lipped and grooved for the missing pin. There is a notch in frame for the pin. The buckle is flat on the reverse and rounded on the obverse. It is well finished with file marks on all edges. Very similar examples are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, pages 79-81; figs 324 and 326). These examples are dated at between 1350 and 1400, and this example is of a similar date.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible strap-end. The copper-alloy artefact appears to be part of a single sheet strap end which was once folded and held together with a single rivet. One end of the artefact shows evidence of a break, and it is likely that the object broke as a result of wear on the fold. There is a curcular perforation at the terminal end, possibly for a rivet holding the two ends of the sheet together. The obverse has a border formed by two incised lines. Illustrated examples of this type of artefact are published in Egan and Pritchard (1991, page 127; figs 578 - 583). This object is probably M…
