Medieval silver penny of William I the Lion of Scotland. Dating from 1195 to 1214. The coin is quite worn on both sides. Scottish pennies were of the same quality as English pennies in this period. Their designs are similar to the contemporary English ones except that Scottish pennies, as with this example, have a profile rather than a bust, and the reverse has a star in each quadrant of the cross.
