Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount of medieval date. A figurative mount probably dating from the late 12th to late 13th century AD. The mount probably represents a saint and would have been nailed to a shrine or casket. The head is three dimensional, sub-oval in shape, and has a faintly depicted mouth and nose. A single small blue glass or enamel setting sits within each of the eye sockets. The head tapers smoothly into the neck. The body consists of a sub-rectangular plate which is slightly convex. Its upper surface has numerous shallow cells which presumably would have held enamel insets. There ar…

A base sherd from a Roman samian bowl of probable 2nd to 3rd century AD. The size of the sherd makes an exact classification impossible but the piece certainly appears to be from a deep bowl similar in profile to Curle Type II (see ref.), with a marked break between the flat base and the wall section. It measures 44.6mm long by 34.9mm wide and 24.2mm high. The weight is 12.67g. The fabric is light pinkish orange with occasional small chalk inclusions. The slip is a mid reddish brown.

A cast, copper alloy fragment, probably part of a mount of post-medieval date. The surviving decoration comprises three plumes above a horizontal band decorated with three raised dots and an outer border. There is a suggestion that each of the plumes may be decorated with a face, although this is unclear due to corrosion. The plumes extend below the band and give way to a decorative floral motif. The reverse is flat, with no sign of any pin etc. The surface retains traces of tin or silver coating. It measures 43.4mm high by 27.6mm wide and 3.8mm thick. It weighs 9.79g.
