Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Unidentified object or possible hinge. Copper-alloy object, now rather corroded. It is basically flat and rectangular, 43 x 20 mm, and broken at one end. A groove runs along either long edge, and the front is divided into three fields by two longitudinal ridges, each of which is transversely ribbed on the top. The ridges and grooves run up to a pair of hinge loops at the complete end, apparently cast into shape onto the front of the object. Each one is as wide as the outer field, and they enclose an iron hinge bar. In between the hinge loops is the stub of a surviving pin, probab…

Complete set of copper-alloy tweezers with moulded loop and wide flaring arms. The loop is chunky and looks as if it was cast; it is nearly 4 mm square in cross-section at the topmost point. The loop is narrow internally, measuring a maximum of 1.5 mm wide. Below, each face has two transverse grooves and then a pair of back-to-back crescent notches, then a single transverse groove. The arms below the loop are flat and flare evenly from the loop to the tips, which are 13.5 mm wide. One tip is turned in at right angles and the other at slightly less than ninety degrees. The arms are…

One arm from a pair of copper-alloy tweezers, now very corroded. The loop is missing and the arm is a minimum of 5 mm wide at the fresh break. No decoration survives on the arm, which flares evenly to 11 mm wide at the tip. The tip is turned in at less than ninety degrees. Total surviving length 45 mm and the weight is 2.57g. It is very hard to date an undecorated pair of tweezers of this shape; they may be Roman, Anglo-Saxon or medieval. 43-1500 AD.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire West and Chester
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in cross section. Through the centre of the weight are two lengths of iron wire (3.2mm diameter). These wires protrude through both the base and the conical top. The wire may have formed a small loop at the top of the weight to aid safe-keeping and storage. The weight measures 34.4mm in length, 36mm width and is 37.8mm thick. It weighs 188.29 grams or 6.64ozs (2906 grains). The weight is decorated with a series of vertical cast linear ribs. These…

Fragment of copper-alloy strap-end. The split end flares, but has lost its very end together with its rivet holes. It is now a maximum of 9 mm wide, and is decorated on its front with a fine groove down either side. These grooves run down to where the strap-end becomes solid, which is marked by two or three transverse grooves which run around the front and sides, but not the reverse, of the strap-end. A short length of solid metal survives, just 5 mm wide and undecorated. the total length is 26 mm and the object weighs 1.95g. This strap-end is of Thomas's Class B, Type 1, and is simil…

Most of a pair of tweezers, now in three pieces. The tips of the arms are now missing, and the tweezers are now a maximum of 6 mm wide. They taper evenly towards the expanded loop, which is 4 mm wide. A groove runs up either long side and over the loop, but there is no other decoration. The metal is an unusual grey/beige colour, which suggests a lead alloy, but the object is also rather light, which might perhaps suggest an alloy predominantly of tin. The broken edges are very fresh, but a darker brown colour which does not help in identifying the metal. The object has a surviving …

Fragment of one arm from a pair of tweezers. The fragment represents part of the tip of the arm, and although one corner is missing it can be seen that the tip was turned inwards, roughly at right angles, to provide a better grip. The fragment flares from a minimum of 14 mm wide at the broken top to 18 mm wide at the tip; it is 17 mm long and weighs 1.11g. The surface is very corroded, but a neat longitudinal row of seven small ring-and-dot motifs is visible down the centre, and a row of dots can just be seen down either edge. This decoration suggests a middle or late Anglo-Saxon d…

Copper-alloy ring, perhaps the frame from a brooch or buckle. The ring is nearly circular externally (25 x 26 mm) but internally one edge is shaped into a slight V with a dip in the centre. This may represent a constriction for a pin. The cross-section is roughly oval and 2.5 x 3.5 mm. The object weighs 3.58g.Perhaps medieval or early post-medieval, c1100-1650AD.

Three lead-alloy rings, all 21-22 mm in diameter. All have roughly circular or oval cross-sections; two are more chunky, about 3.5 mm in cross-section, and one is slimmer, 2-2.5 mm in cross-section. Lead-alloy rings of the chunky shape, but only 15 mm in diameter, are identified by Egan and Pritchard, Dress accessories, as early 15th-century shoe-buckles (1991, 62-4). Lead alloy is not strong, and so may not be suitable for other heavier uses. Probably 1400-1450AD.

Head and part of shaft from a pin of Cool’s type 18, probably made from jet. The head is in the shape of a human head, roughly triangular in cross-section with a broad back to the head and a sharply pointed nose and chin. The chin is jutting, with a straight groove above for the mouth; a ridge above forms the upper lip, and above this is a short but prominent vertical ‘Roman’ nose. A solid brow ridge runs from the nose to the hair. Above is a quiff-like hairstyle which curves down the back of the pinhead. The hair is decorated with oblique grooves either side of a central ve…

Tiny early Anglo-Saxon buckle, made from copper alloy. The frame is oval, and measures just 12 mm long and 15.5 mm wide. It is circular in cross-section, now rather corroded but perhaps originally 2 mm in diameter. The copper-alloy pin survives, with the loop wrapped around the frame and the tip of the pin curving neatly around the outer edge. Two hinge loops made from copper-alloy sheet are corroded around the frame, and this is all that survives of an original plate. th eobject weighs 0.25g. Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe fragment, blade end. There are well filed casting lines running down either side. There are no raised ribs on either surface. There is a long groove on the broken end - the end of the socket. Very little of the cutting edge remains. The sides of the cutting edge do not flare - this does not appear to have been re-sharpened very often. Much of the original surface is missing on one side. The original surface has a fine brown patina. This may have been deliberately cut. Viewed from the sides the broken edge is slightly convex (a very shallow v), per…
