A copper alloy, two-piece strap-end. The strap end consists of a cast front plate, with the decorative terminal riveted to a sheet back plate. While the main part of the strap end is undecorated the terminal has diagonal grooves cut in it in an abstract design. This type of strap-end often has a terminal in the form of a kings head but this example looked more like a grotesque face. Two rivets could just be seen on the front of the strap end. Strap ends of this type found in London excavations (Egan & Pritchard 1991)have been dated to mid 14th to 15th centuries.

A damaged center spacer of a composite strap-end. The spacer consists of a circular main part 16mm across with a 7mm diameter hole. One side of the object has a collared, pointed knop. Opposite this is a roughly rectangular tab from which the, now missing, forked part of the spacer springs. Strap-ends of this type are normally dated to the 14th or early 15th century.

A copper alloy strapend, in unusually good condition, with silver and niello decoration. The strapend has gently curving sides with notches cut along them. Two domed headed silver rivets fix the end to the strap. Below these is a crescent shaped groove and a panel with a Trewhiddle style animal on a niello background. The terminal is in the form of an animals head with rounded ears, a 'V' shaped brow, niello eyes and a broad snout. The back of the object is undecorated.

A very worn copper alloy strap end. The surfaces are eroded and the split to take end of the strap has gone but the shape suggests that it may have been a Thomas Class A strap end

A worn copper alloy strap end. Two silver rivets bridge the split at the belt end. Just below the rivets three incised arcs suggest the presence of a design and at the terminal end the crescents of two animal ears can be traced.

A copper alloy strap end with silver rivets to attach it to the strap. There is a 'V' shaped notch cut between the rivets. The sides taper down to a rather simple zoomorphic terminal consisting of two crookedly cut rounded ears. The broadest area of the front of the strapend has an incised arc with a saltire cross over. Below this is a rectangular panel of incised design which is obscured by corrosion. The reverse is undecorated.

An incomplete late Roman copper alloy leaf-shaped strap end with both ends now missing, but likely to have had a bifurcated tip. It is 33.8mm long and 15.2mm at its widest point. The engraved ornament consists of large peacock and what is likely to represent the tree-of-life. The peacock stands in profile to the left and pecks the tree which has a cross-hatched trunk and four branches, three of which terminate in three fruits. The peacock has a ‘crown’ of three crest feathers and its neck, body and tail are decorated with zig-zag, cross-hatched or oblique lines. On the tail feather…

An undecorated, three-piece, copper alloy strap end. The lower edge comes to a simple point and the upper edge has two uneven 'V' shaped cut outs. A rivet at the upper end would have pierced the leather as well as the two outer plates whereas the lower one holds the rectangular spacer and plates. A strap end similar to this one was found in a 1270 - 1350 context in London

Modern damage has broken the plate and the forked spacer, possibly with a decorative knop is missing. Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Roman strap end. The lower part is an elongated lozenge shape with an upper rectangular end above two pairs of opposed curving lugs. One one side the lozenge is decorated with two vertically arranged incised dot and circle motifs, terminating with two incised horizontal lines. A line of dots forms a border and these are combined with crescent shaped marks below the lugs. This resembles the 'amphora strap-end' type (Clarke 1979, 281), although the lack of rivet or bifurcated end makes this identification uncertain.
