An Anglo Saxon copper-alloy strap-end dating to the 9th century. The strap-end has curving long edges shaped into scallops, and a stylised zoomorphic terminal (in this case quite stylised). An incised, curvilinear, 'S'-shaped scroll-like pattern is repeated three times along each side down the length of the strap-end, one S shape per scallop. A central pattern of a triangle, two affronted L shapes and two addorsed C shapes provides a mirror symmetry along its length. This curvilinear pattern conforms to Thomas (2003)'s Class A Type 2, 'Patterned' type. There are two rivet holes in the…

A long, narrow cast copper-alloy medieval composite strap-end. Rectangular, terminating in a trefoil knop. Each foil of the knop is, in turn, a trefoil. On the plate, at the end opposite the knop, there is an incised transverse rectangle containing an angular quatrefoil design of the obverse. There are further incised diagonal lines between the quatrefoil and the rectangular border. The reverse plate is plain. In addition there is a central spacer-plate, mirroring the two outer plates until it approximately reaches the incised design. The plates are held together by three rivets…

An early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. Thomas (2003, 2) classifies it as a Class A, Type ?1. This would date the artefact to around the ninth century. The strap-end is leaf-shaped, with one end split to take the strap. Its face is decorated while the reverse plate is plain. The face has a triangular animal-head terminal narrowing to a snout. The ears are in the form of a '9' and an reversed '9', and are joined by a bar. Behind the head there is a single field, once inlaid with silver of which fragments remain. The field contains curvilinear grooves which were also inlaid with …

A narrow, early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. The attachment end has two rivet holes - weak points at which loss has occurred leaving the artefact incomplete. The attachment end (maximum width of 7.6mm) tapers to a width of 3.5mm after 14.6mm. The strap-end is therefore very narrow, tapering again (to 2.2mm) just before it terminates. The strap-end has been bent at the point just after the initial tapering (described above), at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees. Considerable corrosion renders former decoration difficult to discern although the terminal does appear t…

A cast copper-alloy Roman lancet-shaped strap-end. At the attachment end the strap-end is 20.9mm in width. Each side then curves in to a waist of 16.1mm in width before flaring out to a maximum width of 22.1mm. From the point of maximum width the strap-end tapers to a small triangular knop. In the widest area of the field there are four circular perforations in a lozengiform arrangement.
Both faces of the strap-end are flat. The lower face is seemingly undecorated, although it is the area of the artefact which has suffered the most from corrosion. The upper face is dec…

A three-piece composite medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. Sub-trapezoidal in shape with a biconcave terminal. 13.5mm at the attachment end, tapering to 8.3mm and the terminal end above the terminal point. Neither external plate is decorated. Given the leather retained between the two plates it is difficult to discern a central spacer-plate. The plates are held together by two rivets: one towards the attachment end and one towards the terminal. The strap-end seems quite crude as the plates are not in alignment. The reverse face has suffered from pitting. Similar examples can…

Incomplete rectangular copper-alloy object, probably an Anglo-Saxon strap-end of Thomas's Class E. One of its long edges has a row of three (and another missing) triangular protrusions, probably broken links to another part of the artefact. Along the middle of the object are three circular holes, each 4 mm in diameter. The long edge opposite the triangular protrusions is straight, with a ridge on one face and a corresponding groove on the other. The edges are worn and at least some are certainly broken.
This object was originally recorded as a possible medieval chatelaine, by compa…

A copper-alloy medieval composite strap-end. The strap-end is composed of two sheets which sandwich a spacer. It is held together by two rivets which pass through circular perforations located at the attachment and terminal ends. The terminal end is sub-semi-circular with a rounded knop. The attachment end features two triangular notches. Due to the low levels of wear to the artefact - some abrasions at both ends - and the presence of leather at the attachment end it is hard to discern the nature of the spacer between the outer sheets. However, similarities in form between this e…

A cast copper-alloy object, probably an early-medieval strap-end. The artefact is almost flat, with a rectangular section but slightly raised perimeter. At the attachment end it splays in two to a maximum thickness of 4.35mm. Through these two sections are two circular rivet holes respectively, both pairs of which contain their rivets. From the attachment end the object flares out to a maximum width of 16.6mm after 24.4mm, having been straight for the first 14.4mm. From the point of maximum width the strap-end tapers to a rounded end. The object is tinned giving it a silvery appe…

A three-piece composite medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. Sub-rectangular in shape with rounded corners. Shallow biconcave terminal. Rectangular with rounded corners in section. Neither external plate is seemingly decorated. The spacer plate is c. 17.8mm in length. The plates are held together by a single, discernible rivet towards the terminal. The example is worn and abraded, particularly on the external plates towards the terminal, and on these same beyond the spacer plate. A similar example can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 147; fig. 699). This date…

Probably one of the external plates from a three-piece composite medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. Sub-rectangular in shape with a biconcave terminal. The plate is concave at the attachment end. Rectangular with rounded corners in section. The plate is undecorated and features a single rivet hole towards the attachment end. Composite strap-ends with such pointed terminals are traditionally dated to the second half of the fourteenth century.

Probably one of the external plates from a three-piece composite medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end. Sub-rectangular in shape with a trapezoidal terminal. Rectangular with rounded corners in section. The plate is decorated with zig-zag wrigglework which overlaps to form lozenges. At the attachment end there are three perforations: the central hole is larger than those which flank it. There is a small triangular notch from the central perforation going into the body of the strap-end. This arrangement of perforations, together with the incision, is typical of composite strap-ends…

A small, worn cast tin strap-end dating to the late medieval period. The artefact is sub oval in shape. In section it is rectangular with rounded corners. The object is hollow with a rectangular aperture at the attachment end; this has been distorted through old damage with the obverse face pushed fowards. There is a circular perforation through both faces at the attachment end. The reverse is plain. The obverse features a raised border which terminates in two opposing, but joined, lobes. The border delineates a central, heart-shaped recess. There is a further aperture at the b…

A copper-alloy probable strap end or buckle plate fragment. The object is sub-rectangular and is comprised of a thin sheet of metal with two intact rivets. There is a large lump of ferrous corrosion on the reverse which may indicate that this object was in fact attached to an iron object rather than material. The find is likely to be medieval in date and is similar in form to a number of strap ends and buckle plates illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 75-260; figs 303-760).

A forked spacer from a circular medieval composite strap-end. Cast in copper-alloy, the object is lunular with an acorn-like collared knop. As such its form has parallels with examples illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 140-141; refs. 648, 80.283/11). The artefact is worn and has been bent out of its former alignment.

A beautiful example of an Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic strap-end. The strap-end is of Thomas' A, Type 1 (Thomas 2003, 2-3; 5) type and terminates with a stylised quadruped's head. The interior of the sub-rectangular field above the stylised head is filled with a geometric design, possibly depicting two heavily stylised standing figures. The reverse is undecorated. The strap-end would have been attached to a leather strap by means of two rivets and the iron remains of these rivets remains in the split opening of the strap-end. The strap-end measures 36 mm long and is 10.1 mm wide, tapering t…

A forked spacer from a circular composite strap-end of medieval date. Cast in copper-alloy, the object is consists of a circle with a flaring upper part and a stylised acorn collared knop at the lower end. The circle's central perforation is quite crude and not quite circular. The artefact is worn and has lost one of its flaring projections as a result of old damage. Similar examples can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 140-141; fig. 92). Further, a parallel, though more complete find, can be seen on this database, ref. BUC-10DA63

A broken forked spacer from a composite strap-end of medieval date. Cast in copper-alloy, the object consists of the open lower end of the strap-end including a stylised acorn collared knop at the terminal. The acorn is well rendered according to the image (see notes, below). Similar examples can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 144; fig. 94) dating to the 14th or 15th centuries AD.

A medieval strap-end of composite construction dating to 14th century, possibly incomplete. The object is sub-circular in form and its front features a central spade-shaped grooved aperture which is flanked on either side by a hole and extant rivet. Although only the front view has been recorded (see notes, below), the recorder states that the front and back plate both survive either side of a forked spacer and attached by the rivets. There appears to be a slight split extending into the body of the visible front plate from the aperture. One might also conjecture that the spacer ha…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman artefact, probably a strap-end, possibly a pendant of the military type. The perforations, a pair of kidney-shaped holes in the upper part of the object and a further broken perforation above, suggest that this is an amphora-shaped strap-end, as such dating to the fourth or fifth century AD (Geake 2001, 31). By definition, the artefact takes the broad shape of an amphora, tapering to a two-part terminal knop 5mm in width. The body to the right of the right-hand kidney-shaped perforation (when looking at the front view of the object) has been bro…
