Medieval composite strap-end with openwork decoration and sheet spacer occupying full width. The outer plates are incomplete, with neither surviving at the attachment edge. The openwork, cut through the front plate and the spacer, consists of a trefoil arch over a rectangular aperture in which a stem bearing a thistle stands up from the base. There are two rivets, placed centrally above and below the aperture, and towards the outside edge two large half-round cut-outs on the sides. Medieval composite strap-end. Two sheets of equal sizes secured by rivet at both ends, tapering from width 13mm at attachment edge to 6mm. There is no spacer. The front plate is decorated with rocker-arm engraving in a saltire and a line along one side, as well as three circular perforations between a pair of edge nicks (which also cut through the back plate) and a waist before the terminal knop. This has an additional plate held by the same rivet and decorated with radiating grooves and one transverse groove (cf. Dress Access. no.703). 39mm x 13mm. 14th century

Late Saxon incomplete Winchester style strap-end, corroded, tongue-shaped with cast openwork pattern worked on both sides with central plant stem and tendrils and rectangular bosses on sides of both faces, terminal missing, split attachment end pierced by two copper alloy rivets, 20 x (at least) 31mm. This strap-end is of identical size and form to that illustrated in EAA 74 (1995) fig.41, no.75 and is broken in the same place, the only difference being the number of rivets at the attachment end (two rather than three). 10th century.
