A Medieval copper alloy cast anthropomorphic mount, most likely a harness pendant (13th - 14th century). The mount depicts a female figure. The face has been cast in high relief with almond-shaped eyes and broad nose. The brows are formed from an extension of the nose line. An incised semi-circular line around the face creates a raised border representing hair or a headdress. The pendant narrows below the head and then expands to form the torso before narrowing at the waist. The curve possibly represents breasts. At the waist the pendant then expands to form a sphere with three moulde…

Two Roman copper alloy decorative mounts (AD43-200). These mounts are probably military in origin possibly from belt plates of scabbard plates (Bishop & Coulston 1993: 89 and 97). Stylistically the two fragments are very similar but they do not conjoin. They comprise two strips of sheet copper alloy with parallel sides and pressed/hammered decoration. There is a raised border running parallel to both the sides. In between these borders is a large raised ring and dot motif (diameter: 10mm) then two raised dots (arranged in line) to one side. This pattern is the same on both strips…

The pattern on the front comprises two snakes hooked around each other with the tail from each tail curved around on itself. The heads have open mouths and a ring represents the eye. There are traces of gilding present within the depressions of the engravings. Leslie Webster and Sonja Marzinzik, Bri…

An Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic terminal made of silver and partly gilded The terminal is hollow-cast, with a pyramidal socket of rectangular section which would perhaps originally have held a wooden rod. On the narrower sides are two 4mm-long tapering extensions, which could have accommodated ridges on the rod. These are also zoomorphic, and although worn, the shape of the muzzles, the eyes and upright ears can still be made out. A single large silver rivet with a rounded head is still in situ across the socket, running between the wider sides of the rectangle. The tapering end is in th…

An incomplete copper alloy Early Medieval object of unidentified form (probably 6th century AD). It is rectangular in plan with a further rectangular element set at right angles to one of the short sides of the rectangle. It is likely that this object was originally symmetrical with a similar element on the opposite side, but nothing now remains of this and the breaks that occurred in antiquity are now rounded and worn. Within the large rectangular area there are a series of decorative features; a rectangular panel is surrounded by a gilded recess and then by a moulded border. The …
