Cast copper alloy scabbard mount with squared off upper section and lower section tapering to a point. Two rivets remain at the top of the mount and two others remain on the left side of the mount as part of a group of four within the decoration. The two rivets on the right side of this group are missing. These rivets would have attached to a hide cover for a wooden scabbard which may have also been lined. The mount is 55 mm long, 35 mm wide and 1.7 mm in thickness. It weighs 16.77 g. A typical Iron Age sword is 35mm in width, so the scabbard would have been wider. This object is d…

A copper-alloy mount of medieval date. A figurative mount probably dating from the late 12th to late 13th century AD. The mount probably represents a saint and would have been nailed to a shrine or casket. The head is three dimensional, sub-oval in shape, and has a faintly depicted mouth and nose. A single small blue glass or enamel setting sits within each of the eye sockets. The head tapers smoothly into the neck. The body consists of a sub-rectangular plate which is slightly convex. Its upper surface has numerous shallow cells which presumably would have held enamel insets. There ar…

Cast copper alloy mount or stud decorated with flower pattern composed of central bosses surrounded by rings and pellets and a rope border around the edge of the mount. The upper face of the mount is tinned and only the base of the shank on the back survives. Judging from its size and style, it may have been used as a belt decoration. Read (2001) illustrates another mount with similar shape and decoration on p.31, No.236, which he dates to the 15th and early 16th centuries. Bailey (1997) illustrates a mount with almost identical decoration on p.55, as part of a group of bel…

Rectangular (37mm x 32mm) mount from casket or chasse decorated with Limoges champlevé enamel in the form of a palmette. There are two fixing holes at the top corners and two more lower down within the scrolls of the design. The background is in dark blue and the motif in green, yellow, pale blue, white and red. The motif is not uncommon in 12th-century art and the use of enamel here is close to that in palmettes on quatrefoil medallions illustrated in Egan, T. ed. 1996, 152-3, cat. no.35). Last quarter of the 12th century.

Medieval? copper alloy object, 21mm wide, 24mm long and weighing 4.61grams. The object is probably part of a swivel mount from a strap junction? It begins with a circular knop which has a pinched in collar below (where the other half of the swivel would have sat). This rests on a wider circular platform 3mm high and 8mm in diameter. Below this the object forms two circular arms, 3mm in diameter, which protrude out and then sharply turn in giving it a 'squashed' circlular form. The arms terminate with circular bars attached at right angles. The outer edge has a clear terminal but the in…

Copper alloy Roman mount. This mount is circular in plan and domed. It is decorated to the front with a relief moulding of the face of Medusa. The face is worn and simple, but it is possible to see a rectangular shaped nose, the rectangular indent that forms the mouth and the subrectangular indents that form the eyes. Above the brow is a moulding that represents Mercury’s helmet with the familiar wings extending to either side. The object is worn, but the original surface survives with an even dark green patina, with small patches of damage showing as light green. The reverse of the …
