An Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic terminal made of silver and partly gilded The terminal is hollow-cast, with a pyramidal socket of rectangular section which would perhaps originally have held a wooden rod. On the narrower sides are two 4mm-long tapering extensions, which could have accommodated ridges on the rod. These are also zoomorphic, and although worn, the shape of the muzzles, the eyes and upright ears can still be made out. A single large silver rivet with a rounded head is still in situ across the socket, running between the wider sides of the rectangle. The tapering end is in th…

A probably medieval silver decorative mount in good condition, oval in plan, domed and multifoil in form. The domed front face has 12 evenly spaced and sized lobes radiating from a central point, the outer edges of which are rounded. The back face is hollow and within it is a large fragment of lead solder, which was used to attach this mount to another item, probably a belt or strap. Discussion: This mount is similar to other copper-alloy mulitfoil mounts such as those discovered in London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 195, fig 122, no 1045). These parallel examples normal…

A medieval silver-gilt mount in the form of a bar, with a central, oval boss with punched decoration. The mount was probably for a girdle, belt or strap. A hole at each end was either to take a rivet or for stitching. The mount probably dates to the 13th or 14th century.

Description: Cast, inverted pear-shaped, sub-oval object made from gilded silver. The openwork decoration shows a symmetrical composition with two birds flanking a stylised plant. The stylised plant is upside down, with its base emerging from the animal head which rests between the birds' heads; alternatively, the central stem and two pairs of branches can be read as a human body emerging from the animal head. The animal head at the top is sub-triangular and fox-like, with two small pointed ears projecting from the smooth curve of the top of the object. There is a double moulding at t…

A cast silver oval mount of convex cross-section, with traces of gilding and niello. The decoration shows a symmetrical composition with a debased palmette between backwards-looking addorsed birds with raised wings meeting in the centre. There are traces of gilding as well as of niello remaining in some grooves. There are two patches of tin-lead solder on the back, suggesting that the object has been modified.. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence of the surface of the mount indicated a silver content of approximately 91%, with mercury gilding and niello. The piece is an examp…
