A complete late Roman - Early Medieval (4th - early 5th Century) copper alloy buckle and plate of Hawkes and Dunning Type 1B. The buckle has a pair of facing dolphins at the centre of the outer edge. Each has open jaws defined by two incised transverse lines and a ring-and-dot for the eye. A recess in the area between the jaws serves as the pin rest. Each dolphin has a horse extending from its crest and which look in the opposite direction to the dolphin. The horses are flat and set below the dolphins that are moulded. A copper alloy fragment of a composite buckle (mid 14th - early 15th century). Only a small part of the frame, part of the two forks and the pin are present. The rest of the frame and the two buckle plates are missing. The buckle is broken across the frame where it starts to curve up to form the sides of the frame. A Post Medieval copper alloy buckle with an inset cross-bar (16-17th century). The frame has an internal triangular projection with a notch for the pin rest. The corners of the frame opposite the cross-bar are also cast to form angular points. The frame is decorated with two incised parallel lines on the arms of the frame just above the cross-bar, and there is a flange that extends along the curved edge. A rectangular framed buckle with a notch for the tongue rest and a flange extending along the edge of the tongue rest. The tongue is still present. The cross bar extends beyond the frame and curves round to meet the frame; this is free moving. The pin has a long tube that hangs on the bar. The frame is rectangular with tall shaped sides that are grooved to receive the locking arm. The arm is broken so that it no longer extends over the frame. Pale-mid green patina. A Medieval copper-alloy buckle and plate (1270-1450). The buckle has an oval frame with a pronounced triangular lip where the pin would rest. The buckle has a square plate attached; the corrosion makes it appear as if the plate is integral to the buckle. Near the inner edge of the plate is a roughly circular perforation for the pin to attach. Within this perforation is a small lump of iron corrosion ?the remains of the pin.
