Copper-alloy ring, perhaps the frame from a brooch or buckle. The ring is nearly circular externally (25 x 26 mm) but internally one edge is shaped into a slight V with a dip in the centre. This may represent a constriction for a pin. The cross-section is roughly oval and 2.5 x 3.5 mm. The object weighs 3.58g.Perhaps medieval or early post-medieval, c1100-1650AD.

Three lead-alloy rings, all 21-22 mm in diameter. All have roughly circular or oval cross-sections; two are more chunky, about 3.5 mm in cross-section, and one is slimmer, 2-2.5 mm in cross-section. Lead-alloy rings of the chunky shape, but only 15 mm in diameter, are identified by Egan and Pritchard, Dress accessories, as early 15th-century shoe-buckles (1991, 62-4). Lead alloy is not strong, and so may not be suitable for other heavier uses. Probably 1400-1450AD.

Tiny early Anglo-Saxon buckle, made from copper alloy. The frame is oval, and measures just 12 mm long and 15.5 mm wide. It is circular in cross-section, now rather corroded but perhaps originally 2 mm in diameter. The copper-alloy pin survives, with the loop wrapped around the frame and the tip of the pin curving neatly around the outer edge. Two hinge loops made from copper-alloy sheet are corroded around the frame, and this is all that survives of an original plate. th eobject weighs 0.25g. This type of buckle is most common in the seventh and early eighth centuries c.600-720AD. …

Incomplete copper alloy medieval ornate buckle. The frame of the buckle is oval in plan with a semicircular section. To the front of the frame are four integral knops. The reverse of the buckle is flat and plain. The frame is broken to one side, with approximately one half-missing. The buckle is abraded but most of the original surface survives with a dark green patina. There are small patches of lighter green where the surface is damaged. The break edges are worn smooth suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. The buckle is 17.78mm long, 18.72m wide, 3.28mm thick at the knops and weig…

Incomplete copper alloy buckle, probably medieval. This buckle frame is trapezoidal in plan. The two sidebars of the frame are rectangular in section. Placed approximately one third along each arm is an integral semicircular flange with a circular perforation, presumably so that a bar could be fixed between the two opposing sides of the frame. The front bar of the frame is flattened and decorated with six transverse grooves. The back bar is similarly flattened but undecorated. The reverse of the buckle is plain. The pin is missing. The object has a dark brown patina. It is 23.16mm lo…

Copper alloy single looped rectangular buckle with integral rectangular plate. There is one rivet hole at the strap attachment end, and another containing a copper alloy rivet at the frame end. On the reverse the rivet still holds a square sheet of copper alloy which acts as a washer. The bar is narrowed and recessed. There is a circular hole at the frame in which the pin would have worked. The surface of the buckle plate shows traces of gilding.

An incomplete copper-alloy buckle plate, rectangular in shape measuring 27mm in length and 22mm in width, it is incomplete as it has been broken at its fold. There are two circular rivet holes in the outer corners of the plate, the plate is recessed to accomodate the missing frame and has the remains of a rectangular pin slot. The front face is decorated by paring away the metal, with a winged two legged beast with a dragon like head. It has multiple stamping to indicate feathers or perhaps scales. The rough surface of the areas made lower was possibly for keying enamel, none of wh…

A circular copper-alloy buckle with a central bar, measuring 20mm in external diameter and 15mm in internal diameter. The pin is missing but slight traces of corroded iron suggest that it may have been iron. This buckle is similar from examples from London and buckles of this form were used for spurs in the late medieval period (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 65-66, no 214).
