Incomplete copper alloy one piece Roman Colchester brooch. One of the wings is short, flat and complete, whilst the other is entirely missing. At the head of the brooch the forward facing hook that held the spring cord is entirely missing. Nothing of the spring or pin survives. The bow of the brooch is sub-circular in section, with a slight flattening to the back, which is more obvious towards the head. It tapers to a sharply pointed foot. The lower foot portion of the brooch is bent out of true with two noticeable kinks. Nothing of the catchplate remains. The original surface of the b…

Fragment of cast, copper alloy Romano-British two piece ‘Colchester type’ brooch. The wings on this fragment are severely truncated but appear to have been semicylindrical. Behind the head of the brooch is the remains of the double lug, that originally had two perforations one on top of the other. Only a portion of the lower part of the lower lug survives. The spring and pin are entirely missing. Running from the head of the brooch onto the bow is a pronounced crest. The bow is truncated just beneath the crest and nothing else of the brooch remains, however it is possible to see th…

Early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy supporting-arm brooch. This brooch was previously recorded on this database as an "unknown type" late Roman bow brooch. The original discription of the object has been kept below:
The head of the brooch is formed from a flat, rectangular panel capped at either end with a D-shaped pierced lug. The rectangular panel is decorated to the front with two moulded steps and a moulded horizontal beaded line that runs along the bottom edge of the first step. Within the spring case the copper-alloy spring survives intact with six coils, with a short length of th…

Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece type brooch. Both wings are complete, semicylindrical and plain. Behind the head is a lug pierced with two circular perforations which holds the surviving six coiled spring head with external cord. The pin shaft is entirely missing. Running from the head of the brooch onto the bow is a well-moulded crest with a notch at its very top. Where the crest ends, a grooved line then runs for the length of the brooch. To either side of the crest is a moulded raised line that also runs the length of the brooch, flanking the groove…

Incomplete copper alloy, one piece ‘Colchester’ type Romano-British brooch. The wings of the brooch are complete but worn to both sides. The forward facing hook is truncated and worn. Behind the head of the brooch, below the remains of the forward facing hook, is a short downward facing ‘hook’ that is presumably the remains of the integral spring coil. The spring coil and pin shaft are otherwise entirely missing. The bow is subcircular in section with a flattened behind. It is complete and ends in a blunt point. It is now bent with a ninety degree down turn at the top. The catc…

Incomplete, one piece Nauheim derivative, Iron Age or early Romano-British brooch. The head of the brooch would once have been formed from the coiled wire forming the spring coils, spring chord and pin. However this portion of the brooch has broken away, leaving only a short length of the wire bent in a C shape that curves forward above the bow for 5mm. The bow of the brooch turns down from the head with an approximate 90-degree bend. It is flat in section with a slight doming. It tapers to a sharp point, without a foot knob. The bow is undecorated. The rear of the bow is also plain. T…

Fragment of cast copper alloy Romano-British bow brooch, probably from a Colchester two piece type. This fragment represents the lower portion of the bow, foot, and catchplate of the original brooch. Everything else is missing. The bow is triangular in section and extends into the foot without tapering. The centre of the bow is decorated with a raised central rib that continues along the foot. This rib is decorated with a continuous zigzag pattern. The catchplate is pierced with a circular perforation above a triangular perforation. These are both blocked. The curl is intact and recess…

Fragment of cast copper alloy Romano-British Colchester two piece type brooch. This fragment represents the head of the brooch. The wings are semicylindrical and damaged to either end. To the reverse of the wings, the lug with two perforations survives intact. It holds the remains of the spring coils, four intact to one side, two to the other (there would have been eight coils in total) and the external spring chord, which passes through the upper perforation. The pin shaft is missing. At the front of the wings is a pronounced crest that runs onto the top of the bow. The brooch is tru…

Fragment of cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch. The head plate is formed from a central square from which extends to either side and above a crescentic terminal on a slight, wasted band (demarcated by two parallel grooved lines), giving it a cruciform plan. All three terminals are chipped and abraded, with one being little more than a triangular knop. The central square is decorated with a vertical line of five punched dots to the left side (when viewed head on) and an unknown number to the right, though at least three are visible. There does not appear to be any other dec…

Fragment of Anglo-Saxon square headed brooch. This fragment represents one of a pair of side lobes typically found on the brooch. The fragment is tongue shaped in plan and flat in section and is 30.18mm long, 23.6mm wide and 3.9mm thick. The top face of the fragment is abraded, but it appears to be decorated with five concentric arches of raised beaded lines. Within the inner most arch is a raised moulding, probably representing a facemask. The mask has suboval depressions for ‘eyes’ and possibly a long down turned moustache. The top face of the fragment retains a fair amount of gi…

Almost complete copper alloy Roman bow brooch. The wings of the brooch are semicylindrical and plain. The double lug to the rear of the wings holds the complete eight-spring coil, complete with external chord and the pin shaft, which survives for 28.94mm. Only the very end of the pin shaft is missing, the missing portion being almost parallel to the length of the catchplate. The bow is unusually lozenge shaped and bevelled. Beneath the bow is an integrally moulded boss formed from a central globule with a raised band above and below. The foot of the brooch is plain and tapers slightly …

Incomplete copper alloy Roman disc brooch. This brooch is circular in plan. It has a surviving diameter of 33.6mm, is 1.86mm thick and weighs 4.36g. The field of the disc surface is divided by raised concentric lines, one that borders the entire disc, another set 5.4mm in, and a final, thicker line set 4.6mm from that line. This divides the surface into a central dot surrounded by a double band. The central dot appears to be devoid of enamel but the now bright green copper alloy surface is visible. The inner band has traces of enamel, now a patchwork of yellow and green, within which …

Incomplete copper alloy ‘Wessex type La Tène I’, one piece Iron Age brooch. The head of the brooch is now missing, but would once have comprised of an integral four coil spring head that would have then extended into the pin shaft. An upward pointing, pointed knop is all that remains of this construction. The bow of the brooch is distinctively arched with a flared C shape profile. It is subrectangular in section, and tapers to either end. The foot of the brooch is incomplete and now points straight down, with the remains of the catchplate curl. Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British trumpet brooch. The trumpet head of this brooch is entirely missing, as is the spring and pin. The top of the brooch now begins with the short portion of bow that would have extended from beneath the narrow end of the trumpet head and which joins at the opposite end to the acanthus moulding. This portion is worn, but appears to have had at least one raised moulded line. The acanthus moulding is domed and decorated with a grooved curved X which divides the dome into a sub-lozenge field to either side and a tongue shaped field above and below. The r…

Complete cast copper alloy brooch 13th century brooch. The brooch is sub-shield shaped in plan and domed in section, in that it is a moulded design with, probably, a slightly flatter reverse. The frame is formed from two opposing figures each with both arms upraised, joined by a subrectangular moulded mid section to complete the frame at the upper edge. The lower portion of frame is formed from the lower bodies of the figures curving down and inwards into a single leg, which are similarly joined as the hands, with a rectangular portion of frame.
