The bow and catchplate of an Iron Age brooch. The expanded hollow bow is worn smooth but there is incised ornament consisting of diagonal lines, or infilled triangles, at its upper and lower extremities. Below the bow is the catchplate and from this the foot bends around and terminates in a zoomorphic snouted terminal. The spring (probably four coil) and pin are both missing.

A late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch. The brooch consists of a long bow (58 mm in length) which would have originally bowed in a continuous curve, although it is now damaged and bent out of shape. The wings of the brooch are 14 mm wide. The head of the brooch would have originally had an integral sping and over-head chord hook. However the chord hook is broken and the spring, which would have been located under the rear of the chord hook, is missing. Very little of the brooch's catch plate remains. The brooch is similar to an example illustrated in Ha…

A copper alloy cast bow brooch of Late Iron Age to early Roman date. The brooch is a Colchester one-piece brooch and dates to the 1st century AD. The brooch is incomplete, missing some of the spring, the pin and much of the catch-plate. The head has the typical Colchester type arrangement with thin wings positioned beneath the chord and secured by a tapering, forward-projecting claw. The spring coils four times before forming the chord. The chord has broken before it coils to form the spring at the other side of the head. The upper bow is oval in section (5.4mm by 3.7mm) with no surviv…

A Late Iron Age to Early Roman cast copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester One-Piece type, and dating to the 1st century AD. Although the brooch shares majority of the Colchester One-Piece characteristics, it has a separates axis bar, which was possibly inserted into the spring mechanism later. The brooch has lost the pin and catch-plate but is otherwise complete. The spring emerges from the underside of the rear of the head and coils three times before the chord is secured by a forward pointing loop at the head. The spring is coiled around a separate hollow copper alloy axis bar, const…

Fragment of Roman bow brooch, possibly a British copy of an Aucissa because of its potentially widely curving bow. Its foot is also similar to an example in Hattatt (no.1496). The fragment is 27mm long and consists of the lower bow, foot and catchplate. At the break, the bow is 6mm wide and tapers to 4mm where the foot extends. At this point the catchplate extends backwards, behind the foot. The foot expands to a damaged 6mm over 12mm. The bow is decorated with a deep groove either side of a flat central ridge decorated with tiny horizontal incised lines. Below this are two more gro…

Fragment of Roman bow brooch, possibly an Aucissa 'strip bow', Langton Down or Colchester type. The fragment is straight and 26mm long, with an even width of 7.5mm. At the base of the bow it is broken slightly on one side. The bow is decorated with two shallow but wide grooves flanking each edge. One of these at least appears to have been decorated with rocker-arm. On the reverse of the bow the catchplate is rather thin and the curl is damaged. It is not openwork. However where the catchplate joins the reverse of the bow it is thicker and the bow reverse shows where it has been wor…

A fragment of an Iron Age Celtic brooch of a type identified by Jope as an 'elfin' stylised face. The fragment consists of the foot and catchplate (the catchplate is now bent flush with the foot). The foot is an elongated triangle in shape, flat across the bottom edge (19.2mm wide) and narrowing towards the break at the bow (9.5mm wide). The face is decorated with a raised cast design which Jope identifies as a very stylised human face. At the top of the foot just before the bow is a projection which curves in towards the bow. The piece is a very close parallel to a more complete bro…

The brooch is a La Tene I type, which is dated to c. 450-250 BC. It is made from cast copper alloy. The spring is missing from the brooch. In section the bow is a wide sub semi-circular shape. The bow in plan is a pointed oval shape. The outer surface is decorated with a column formed by a zig-zag design. Protruding from the lower terminal of the bow is the catch plate, which is …
