The shoulders taper to a slender hoop, which is now distorted. This form of ring is characteristic of signet rings of the period. Dimensions: Diameter of bez…

Description: A Roman gold ear-ring of rectangular form, seemingly complete, though distortion obscures most of the front face. The edges are lightly scalloped and the simple openwork decoration comprises a design based on small crescentic piercings. It is not possible to determine the form of the centre of the plate. The long tapered hook, also distorted, is fastened to the centre of a cruciform brace which is soldered to the back of the main plate. Discussion: The ear-ring is Allason-Jones Type 11 (Lindsay Allason-Jones Ear-rings in Roman Britain, Oxford 1989, p8). Ralph Jackson reco…

The hoop is of rectangular section, and is engraved with sprigs of foliage and a black-letter inscription which is difficult to decipher, but which has been read by Dr Malcolm Jones as +honour et cuer (honour and heart). The ring may have been a marriage ring or a love token, and probably dates to the 15th century.

Fragment of a gold bracelet of Late Bronze Age date (c. 1150 BC - c. 750 BC). Length 20mm, width 22mm and c. 0.5mm thick. Weight 3.53g. The fragment is a terminal of sheet gold which has been roughly flattened out. The terminal is oval in plan and adjoins a short remaining stretch of a broad band. At this end there is an old break. Undulations in the metal suggest that the band met the terminal in a strong curve; the original form can be reconstructed as a C-section band with an everted oval terminal.

Roman oval sheet-gold finger ring setting depicting Vulcan. The repousse design shows Vulcan standing holding tongs in his left hand, and a hammer in his raised right hand above an anvil. There appears to be a plain lined border around the design. 1mm of the edge is bent over at 90 degrees, presumably so it could be set into a ring. The metal is very thin, c.0.18mm. Length 12.42mm, width 9.44mm, weight 0.36g. British Museum Curator's report: Gold cameo oval ring setting, with a repoussé design of a standing figure of Vulcan.
