Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Setting from an Anglo-Saxon composite disc brooch. The setting appears to consist of a dome of white material, with a band of gold ropework running around its diameter. Four strips of gold ropework run from this band up towards the centre of the dome, which has a circular setting of similar ropework, which may have formed a setting for a gem stone (now missing). This object has been identified from a photograph only, but clearly represents a central setting of Avent's Class 4 (Avent 1975). Similar central settings occur on composite disc brooches from Milton, Monkton, Sarre and Favers…

Gold and cloisonné garnet setting from the tongue plate of a high status buckle. The setting is sub-rectangular with curved cutaways defining the shoulders. It is made with a sheet gold back plate to which is soldered a single strip of gold sheet set on edge to form a frame for the cloisonné cell work. This is inlaid with well cut garnets over pointillé foil and fills the panel with a design of two skilfully entwined snakes: their heads with well defined open jaws fill the lower corners and their sinuous bodies interlace across the centre of the panel to end in tails tucked beneath…

Gold C-bracteate. The bracteate is made of a disc of gold sheet with a thick, beaded wire soldered round the rim, though coming away from it in places and with the ends now come slightly apart; diameter, 30 mm (approx). The top and bottom edges have been bent over in opposite directions, possibly by agricultural activity rather than deliberately, and the suspension loop of ribbed sheet survives, crushed flat and abraded, on the back.
The disc is decorated with a repoussé design of a stylised horse with open jaws, pricked ear and round eye. Its foreleg is extended and the should…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

The object consists of a Byzantine gold solidus of Maurice Tiberius (582-602), which has been modified into a pendant by the addition of a gold suspension loop. Anglo-Saxon pendants made from re-used imported gold coins are typical of the late sixth and early seventh centuries, especially in Kent. Although the majority of these finds come from graves, stray finds are also recorded, and there is nothing to suggest that this coin comes from a recently disturbed grave, although it is possible that at some point a grave may have accidentally been disturbed in the course of ploughing. The …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Description: The ring consists of a short, plain rod, the ends of which have been drawn out, bent round and overlapped, then hammered flat together to form an irregular circle, which is thicker at the front; diameter: 22 mm. There is a deep nick on one side which was cut in antiquity, probably with the point of a knife to test that it was not plated. Similar nicks are often seen on silver ingots of the Viking period.
Discussion: Rings which have simply overlapped ends and are thicker at the front are typical of the Viking period e.g. from Gotland, Sweden (L. Thunmark-Nylén, 1998, …

A gold strap fitting from a scabbard or sword-belt, set with cloisonné garnet and opaque pale blue glass over pointillé gold foil. The strap mount is in the form of a truncated pyramid with squared-off edges. The top and the lower edge of one side of the fitting are damaged and the cell work is slightly distorted. The surface is also partially covered with earth making it sometimes difficult to assess if cells are empty or not. However it is clear that some of the garnet and blue glass inlays are missing while others have slipped sideways into the cells. Each face is filled with an …

A 9th century Anglo-Saxon gold ring weighing 1.8g. The loop, which is badly bent, is a thin round-sectioned band, flattened and widening towards the bezel. On the shoulder there is a decoration of minute dots, emphasizing the triangular shape obtained, subdivided into three small triangular fields. The bezel of the ring is round, slightly bent at the lower edge, 1 cm in diameter. The bezel has a double frame: around a plain frame there is a scalloped border, which originally would have been set off by niello.

An Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet setting, originally circular but now heavily damaged, with most cells empty; plus a separate garnet and foil. A now distorted quatrefoil int he centre preserves remains of a white inlay (scientific examination (see below) suggested that this is probably shell). The quatrefoil is encircled by four half-round, now empty cloisons. From these, stepped cells radiate outwards to the edge of the setting. Four of them still preserve their garnets. Due to the distortion of the object, the garnets have risen and partly tilted and on three of them it is thus possib…
