Small gold key, probably from a jewellery box. Solid(?) round-sectioned stem, terminating in a rounded projecting tip, the end of which has four clefts forming a cross. Gold personal signet ring, a characteristic type of the sixteenth to seventeenth century. Damaged but complete. Length of bezel 18mm, width of bezel 15mm. Thickness of bezel 1.8mm. Weight 9.05g. Due to damage, the diameter of the hoop cannot be measured accurately. Treasure case no. 2005 T3. The abraded oval bezel is decorated near the edge with a line of punched “dashes” to form a border enclosing an engraved device in the form of a griffin rampant. On the reverse of the bezel is a partly legible maker’s mark, an initial “B” (?) within a shield-shaped fi…

A gold finger ring, a hoop of square-sectioned wire which tapers towards a union formed by ends crossed over and twisted around the opposite end, forming a knot (diameter: 25mm, thickness: 2.8mm; weight: 2.31g). The hoop is somewhat distorted, and the thickness of the ring varies. Overall, the ring is slightly worn and in a good condition. A similar example from Colchester is illustrated in Crummy (1983, 47-8, ref no 1756), but this is copper-alloy and has a circular cross-section with large knot. The wire form of the ring is also close to the style of bracelets. A very similar exa…

Setting from an Anglo-Saxon composite disc brooch. The setting appears to consist of a dome of white material, with a band of gold ropework running around its diameter. Four strips of gold ropework run from this band up towards the centre of the dome, which has a circular setting of similar ropework, which may have formed a setting for a gem stone (now missing). This object has been identified from a photograph only, but clearly represents a central setting of Avent's Class 4 (Avent 1975). Similar central settings occur on composite disc brooches from Milton, Monkton, Sarre and Favers…

A gold signet ring dating to the late 16th or 17th century. The finger-ring has a flat sub-circular bezel engraved with a monogram within an inner plain and outer beaded border. The monogram consists of the bold seriffed initials IT, with the T superimposed on the I. The T has a curled stem. The edge of the bezel is decorated with a further row of beading and a plain incised line which delineates the top of the narrow shoulders. The shoulders taper to a slender hoop, which is now distorted. This form of ring is characteristic of signet rings of the period. Dimensions: Diameter of bez…

A gold post-medieval posy ring. The ring has a D-shaped section with undecorated exterior. The interior has been inscribed in lower case italic script: 'Heue 72 25' my happeness' (Heaven is my happeness (sic)). The inscription 'Heaven is my happyness' is recorded by Joan Evans, English Posies and Posy-Rings (Oxford, 1931), p. 47. A posy ring inscribed with that version and with the maker’s mark ‘TT’ is held in the British Museum’s collections (1961,12-2.211). The style of lettering on the ring suggests a 17th century date. Dimensions: external diameter: 17mm; widt…
