Object type: STRIKE A LIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable strike a light of post medieval date, consisting of an oval shaped worked flint with a rectangular piece of lead wrapped around its centre. It measures 27mm in length and 20mm in width. The lead is perhaps to allow the flint to be held more easily. This strike a light is likely to be circa 18th century in date.

An assemblage of 107 good quality patinated and unpatinated lithic implements but poor quality knapping with thick and irregular flakes, occasional obture striking platforms, incipient cones of percussion and flakes on non-bulbar face struck at alternate angles. 32.8% of the unpatinated flakes have hinge fractures and 11.7% of the patinated flakes have hinge fractures. This lends support to the presence of a small probably early Bronze Age element (patinated) with the majority of the assemblage being of later Bronze Age or Iron Age date.

scraper of oval form, or possibly an end-scraper, which has been snapped. It is 43mm long, 40mm wide, and 10.5mm thick at the thickest part. The scraper is roughly circular, the underside formed by a single smooth break, and the upper side also showing one upper flaked surface, which slopes upwards (i.e. the implement becomes thicker) towards the working edge. This edge is steeply set, with many small flakes removed. Some of these, on the fore-edge and on the right side, have broken through the original medium blue-grey patination which covers most of the tool and show more recent edge…

198 worked flint implements of mainly good quality flint including a large number of cortical pieces and a few cores suggesting on-site production, mainly Bronze Age in date.
Only 7 are definately patinated and 6 of these have later unpatinated retouch. All 7 could be Mesolithic in date and could be local to the site or could have been brought in for re-use from elsewhere. One flint appears to be rolled and could be Palaeolithic in origin. Although a few items are probably Neolithic in date and reflect a blade assemblage it is possible that these, like the Mesolithic flints,…

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A unifacial plano-convex handaxe made on a large flake which remains without further retouch on the bulbous face. There is extensive all-over heavy flaking on the dorsal face. The flint is a motled brown due to staining, the surface is relatively glossy and the flake edges are all slightly rounded suggesting either rolling or wind/water abrasion. This handaxe is Lower Palaeolithic in date.
Dr Kevin Leahy adds: the unifacial form of this implement suggests that it was made using the Levallois technique which would allow it to be placed in the Middle Palaeolithic.
