Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A double-ended worked flint implement, probably an awl or point. It has been made from a large, probably naturally formed flake of pale brownish-grey flint, which is roughly lozenge-shaped. It has a glossy patina. The ventral surface has elliptical waves of percussion. Small, irregular flakes have been removed from almost the entire dorsal surface, although two small areas of nodule cortex remain. One point is flaked from the dorsal side with small, flat flakes along one edge and deeper, conchoidal flaking along the other. The other end has been flaked less extensively on both the ven…

Probable awl or point. Pale brown grey flint with heavy white patina and iron staining. The ventral surface has striking platform and bulb of percussion. The distal end of the flake has been removed to form a small point at one edge..The dorsal surface has several longitudinal flaking scars and several of varing alignment where the point has been shaped at the distal end.

3 small bladelet flakes. All are damaged, resulting in the removal of the bulb of percussion on two and distal edge damage on all. The remaining bulb of percussion is extremely shallow, indicating a soft hammer strike. All have elongate flaking scars on the dorsal surface. The flint ranges from mid grey with mid-gloss patina to off-white with low-gloss patina. These flakes probably derive from bladelet production and as such could date from the Mesolithic to early Neolithic. The dimensions in the fields below represent a sample, the weight is the total for all three.

A broken flint flake with denticulation along the left edge, probably produced using fingernail pressure. This is a fragment of a probable blade flake. It is coarsely struck, with an off-centre triangular cross section. On the ventral surface there is a long striking platform and shallow, scarred bulb of percussion. It has been broken at the distal end. There are flaking scars on the dorsal surface. Mid to light grey flint with low-gloss patina.

3 tertiary flakes of very similar pale beige flint with grey banding and a large, less siliceous area at one side. Although they do not refit, they could all be from the same nodule. All are irregular in shape and have a bulb of percussion on the ventral surface and numerous flaking scars dorsally. The flakes have all been sruck in a similar way resulting in a broad flake with the bulb of percussion slightly to one side of the width. Dimensions: 29.5 mm x 31.5 mm x 8 mm, 28 mm x 32.5 mm x 10 mm, 20 mm x 15.5 mm x 4 mm (Weight below is the total)
