Fragment of copper alloy pin. Very narrow circular-sectioned shaft with regularly-spaced transverse notches along the existing length of one face of the shaft. Mid grey with occasional patches of bright green corrosion. It is 38.52mm long, has a diameter of 1.05mm and weighs 0.21g. Slightly pitted surfaces, some bright green corrosion within some of the notched decorations. No parallel could be found for this pin with its very narrow shaft and unusual regular decoration along its length, in Cool’s typology (1990) or from the Colchester report (Crummy 1983).

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Hooked tag (probably). Triangular object made from copper-alloy sheet. Two edges are intact, running down to a broken apex; the top edge is broken. The metal thickens slightly towards the apex, and there is a pair of parallel grooves running not-quite-straight across just above the apex, which then begins to turn under away from the grooves. The top edge is broken in a series of sharp jagged angles, and there is no trace of sewing holes. A possible copper-alloy rivet does not appear on the reverse and so is probably just a strongly adhering fragment or thick corrosion bubble; ther…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published
Unidentified object or possible hinge. Copper-alloy object, now rather corroded. It is basically flat and rectangular, 43 x 20 mm, and broken at one end. A groove runs along either long edge, and the front is divided into three fields by two longitudinal ridges, each of which is transversely ribbed on the top. The ridges and grooves run up to a pair of hinge loops at the complete end, apparently cast into shape onto the front of the object. Each one is as wide as the outer field, and they enclose an iron hinge bar. In between the hinge loops is the stub of a surviving pin, probab…

Complete set of copper-alloy tweezers with moulded loop and wide flaring arms. The loop is chunky and looks as if it was cast; it is nearly 4 mm square in cross-section at the topmost point. The loop is narrow internally, measuring a maximum of 1.5 mm wide. Below, each face has two transverse grooves and then a pair of back-to-back crescent notches, then a single transverse groove. The arms below the loop are flat and flare evenly from the loop to the tips, which are 13.5 mm wide. One tip is turned in at right angles and the other at slightly less than ninety degrees. The arms are…
