Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Northamptonshire

Copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, of the Langton Down variety. The brooch is bent out of shape and is missing its pin, although the remains of the copper-alloy pin are evident. The brooch is decorated with a simple tapering rib on the obverse of the bow. The head is cylindrical to obscure the hinge from view. The head measures 23.5 mm long whilst the bow (although bent) measures 30 mm. This brooch dates from the mid first century AD, from around the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. Similar examples are illustrated in Hattat (1985, page 472; figs 269-273).

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probably incomplete copper-alloy medieval pilgrim badge. The badge is 27.7 mm long and 15.9 mm wide. The badge depicts the figure of St Barbara standing next to a tower. Comparison with other examples (like SOMDOR-9E68C2 on this database) suggests that this object is incomplete: saints tend to be shown holding a palm branch. The front of the badge is quite worn. The reverse has a loop for attachment.

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period. The flint is of an orange colour. The axehead was polished by grinding it against a granite rock. This polishing is restricted to both sides of the chopping edge. The butt end has been worked with flakes removed from the axe. There is a slight chip from the axehead at the blade edge. It is possible that this occurred during use, but it is also possible that this represents post-depositional damage. Used for felling trees, the axe would once have been set within a haft. As the haft would have been of an organic material it is now mi…

Iron knife blade. The blade suffers from fairly severe ferrous corrosion and is quite fragmentary. The blade's tang remains but the handle is missing, probably because it was made from an organic material such as antler, wood or bone which does not survive in many post-depositional environments. Without a handle which could offer some diagnostic features such an artefact is very difficult to date. However, it probably dates from the late medieval to post-medieval period.

Copper-alloy artefact consisting of a strip of metal which narrows before terminating in a hook, through which a ring of copper-alloy is passed. The sub-rectangular strip has an incurved wider, upper edge, and just below this is a decorative transverse groove. A second decorative transverse groove occurs just above the hook and between the two are a pair of longitudinally set iron rivets. The hook consists of a long curled-under strip. The mount and hook measure 38.7 mm in length and 12.7 mm wide. The ring measures 11.6 mm in diameter. A casting flash runs around the side of the rin…

A cast copper-alloy buckle with an integral triangular plate, from a Roman military belt. The frame and plate are made in one piece; the plate is sub-triangular in shape with an openwork triangle in the centre, below the D-shaped frame. The apex of the triangular plate has a flat circular terminal. Both the outer edge of the plate and the inner edge of the triangular perforation are bevelled, and in between is decoration of linear grooves. The short edge, where the plate is attached to the frame, has a central hole now blocked with iron corrosion from the remains of the pin. At eith…

Copper-alloy strap-fitting consisting of a strip of metal which narrows before terminating in a hook, through which a ring of copper-alloy is passed. The sub-rectangular strip has an incurved wider end and is punched to hold two iron rivets, for mounting the artefact on to another item, likely to be of leather. The mount and hook measure 38.7 mm in length and 12.7 mm wide. The loop measures 11.6 mm in diameter. A casting flash runs around the side of the loop. Copper-alloy mount. The mount is elaborately decorated in relief with curvilinear decoration. The reverse is undecorated and has three attachment studs, probably for attaching the object to leather. The mount is 56 mm long and 21 mm wide. It is 8 mm thick. No parallels have yet been found for this object, but the style of decoration suggests a late medieval to post-medieval date.

Copper-alloy chape. The chape is made from sheet metal, rolled with an overlapping soldered joint. A knop has also been soldered to the bottom, presumably to close the bottom edges of the artefact. The chape is sub-triangular in shape with a rounded tip. The opening of the chape is sub-circular in shape. The artefact is similar (although a little larger) to a series of chapes illustrated in Ottaway and Rogers (2002, 2904; figs 12891-14393) which are cited as being dagger sheath chapes, rather than for swords. This example measures 78.7 mm in length, with a diameter of 15 mm at the open…

Copper-alloy disc brooch, of Anglo-Scandinavian origin. The brooch measures 31mm in diameter and the obverse is decorated with a curvilinear Jellinge-style design, depicting a profile left-facing animal set within a thin raised border (1.9 mm thick). The animal has a prominent circular eye and a bulbous upper jaw; a long lappet extends from the back of the head under one leg and around the other. The body curves to left and right to form a figure-of-eight shape, with a spiral shoulder to the left and a spiral hip to the right. The legs spring from these joints and are angled at the an…
