A copper-alloy adjustable belt or strap loop. The object resembles a buckle frame, but with no provision made for a pin. The single looped, sub-rectangular frame has two pointed internal projections. The loop is 24 mm in length and 15 mm wide. It is similar to examples illustrated in Bailey (2000, page 56; figs 3, 8, 13) which are dated to between the 12th and 14th century.

A copper-alloy adjustable belt or strap loop. The object resembles a buckle frame, but with no provision made for a pin. The single looped, sub-rectangular frame has two pointed internal projections. The loop is 23 mm in length and 14.5 mm wide. It is similar to examples illustrated in Bailey (2000, page 56; figs 3, 8, 13) which are dated to between the 12th and 14th century.

A copper-alloy strap fitting. The fitting consists of a single loop, which is D-shaped. On the flat side of the loop is a projection, 3 mm long, circular in section, and 1.5 mm in diameter. This presumably attached the loop to an object, possibly a small casket or other light item of furniture. The object is likely to be medieval to post-medieval in date.

Copper-alloy artefact consisting of a strip of metal which narrows before terminating in a hook, through which a ring of copper-alloy is passed. The sub-rectangular strip has an incurved wider, upper edge, and just below this is a decorative transverse groove. A second decorative transverse groove occurs just above the hook and between the two are a pair of longitudinally set iron rivets. The hook consists of a long curled-under strip. The mount and hook measure 38.7 mm in length and 12.7 mm wide. The ring measures 11.6 mm in diameter. A casting flash runs around the side of the rin…

Copper-alloy strap-fitting consisting of a strip of metal which narrows before terminating in a hook, through which a ring of copper-alloy is passed. The sub-rectangular strip has an incurved wider end and is punched to hold two iron rivets, for mounting the artefact on to another item, likely to be of leather. The mount and hook measure 38.7 mm in length and 12.7 mm wide. The loop measures 11.6 mm in diameter. A casting flash runs around the side of the loop. A copper-alloy strap divider dating from the late Iron Age. The divider consists of three loops, one of which is broken, another entirely missing, with a highly celticised human head in the centre. The head is quite crude, with a wedge shaped nose, circular punches for the eyes and straight vertical grooves representing the hair. The reverse of the object is flat, apart from a dish to the rear of the central face motif. The face measures 13.6 mm long and 12 mm wide. The remaining complete loop measures 16.5 mm in external diameter, and 11 mm in internal diameter. It is very similar to…

A worn copper-alloy object, probably a strap loop. Sub-oval in shape and sub-rectangular in section. The outer edge features two triangular recesses, one central, the other between centre and side. On the internal side of the inner edge there appear to be two vestigial lobes. Such features, as well as the dimensions of the artefact, are very similar to a parallel ilustrated in Read (2001, 26; fig. 205) which is dated to the second half of the twelfth century.

A copper-alloy bar mount, sub-hemispherical in section. The central lobe has four transverse grooves. The two rivet holes each have a copper-alloy rivet in attachment through corrosion. The object is similar to, though less wide than, an example in Read (2001, 23; fig. 154) which is dated to the second half of the fourteenth century.

An oval swivelling link, possibly from a chain. The item is D-shaped in section, with an expanded base pierved by a circular hole (5 mm in diameter). It is 19 mm wide and 15.1 mm high. This artefact is very similar to an example illustrated in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2001, page 62; fig 485) which Read has suggested is part of a chain for suspending a book. The date is uncertain, although Read's example is tentatively suggested as dating from between the 13th century to 17th century in date.

Copper-alloy medieval barred mount (c. 14th century). The mount is in two parts, linked by a separate rivet. One piece is formed from a cut piece of copper-alloy, shaped like a figure 8, with the bottom of the lower section missing. Over this bottom part the second mount is riveted. This mount is hemispherical in section and is sub-rectangular, running across the mount, horizontally. The rivet runs through the centre of this mount, joining it to the other. The top of the lower mount is pierced with a rivet hole - the rivet is missing. The bottom mount measures 14 mm in length and…

A cast copper-alloy ‘sword-belt fitting’. The object consists of a plate, perforated by two longitudinally arranged rivet holes at the attachment end, which terminates in a hook on the reverse. The artefact is ovoid in shape and slightly convex in profile. The rivet heads are present on the obverse and made from iron, as evidenced by the corrosion product surrounding the perforations. It has been suggested that such objects were used in the early post-medieval period to attach scabbards to baldricks (Geake 2001, 36; Read 2001, 30). A parallel for this artefact can be found in Read…

A worn copper-alloy post-medieval mount with integral pointed lugs. Both reverse lugs are intact. One bends at an angle of around ninety degrees while the other is bent back towards the mount so that it is nearly touching it. The mount takes a common symmetrical form of three sub-circular elements. While the central element is plain the flanking elements to which the lugs are attached appear to take the shape of faces with clearly discernible features. Comparable examples - albeit undecorated - can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 28, 36). These are dated to approximately the …

A probable copper-alloy strap distributor. The artefact has an oval strap loop mounted on a peg which was presumably secured to a box, piece of leather, or some other artefact requiring straps. A somewhat similar artefact is illustrated in Read 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2001, page 62; fig 479). It is probably medieval in date.

A worn cast copper-alloy fragment taking the shape of a sword's hilt, with handle and quillons. To extend the analogy the 'pommel' is circular and features an incised, angular quatrefoil design. The reverse is plain. The 'quillons' feature stepped recesses, weak points at which the object has been damaged following old breaks. The central element ('blade') is also broken. It could have been that straps may have run between the central element and the two others. The motif together with the composition of the metal suggests a medieval date.

A worn and incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy strap fitting: a mount with integral spikes. Asymmetrical with trefoil terminal in which the central leaf is larger than those which flank it. The body widens from this trefoil before terminating at the other end in a sub-circular element. The spikes are located on the reverses of each terminal. The spike on the reverse of the trefoil is bent round towards the trefoil end and is presumably also broken following old damage. The other spike has been broken off completely at the base, also following an old break. Approximately se…

A large but incomplete cast copper-alloy bar mount with central and terminal lobe. Following an old break one of the bars has been lost at the point where it met the central lobe. The extant bar only tapers slightly to its terminal. The bar is sub-hemispherical in section. There is a transverse ridge which delineates the terminal lobe. This latter retains its copper-alloy rivet and is recessed on the reverse. The central lobe is similarly recessed and features a central circular perforation 5mm in diameter. The mount is plain, and is sizeable for its type. A similar mount (alth…
