Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A polished flint axe head, dating to the neolithic period. The flint is of a pale creamy colour, although the colour of the flint is an orangey brown where the axe has been chipped. The chip marks on the axe probably relate to post-depositional damage rather than as a result of damage whilst the axe was in use. The entire body of the axe would once have been polished smooth, a finish achieved by grinding against a sandstone surface. However, much of the surface of the axe is now slightly rough to the touch, a result of post-depositional erosion of the flint. The axe measures 147 mm in …

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period. The flint is of an orange colour. The axehead was polished by grinding it against a granite rock. This polishing is restricted to both sides of the chopping edge. The butt end has been worked with flakes removed from the axe. There is a slight chip from the axehead at the blade edge. It is possible that this occurred during use, but it is also possible that this represents post-depositional damage. Used for felling trees, the axe would once have been set within a haft. As the haft would have been of an organic material it is now mi…

A knapped flint knife created from a dark grey flint. The knife is 56.8 mm long, 39.7 mm wide and 9.8 mm thick. The artefact appears to have been broken at it's bottom edge, but is otherwise intact. The flint has been retouched on all of its original edges but one side exhibits considerably more refined retouch than the others, forming something of a serated blade. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible on the tool's ventral surface. Interestingly, also on the ventral surface, the flint is affected by what appears to be an iron corrosion product. This is possibly the result of the t…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period (4500 - 2000 BC). The arrowhead is beautifuly bi-facially worked. Unfortunately it is missing its tip. This may be a result of use, but it is more likely to have been broken after deposition. The remains of the arrowhead are 15.2 mm long, 15.3 mm wide and 2.7 mm thick.

A partly-cortical flint flake blade, with cortex on the right side of the dorsal flake. The flake has been retouched on the left side, dorsal and ventral faces, and the distal ventral edge. Retouch is short, but irregular, particularly on the left side. The bulb of percussion on the ventral surface is pronounced; the flake was caused by a hard hammer strike. Utilised as a cutting tool. Neolithic to Early Bronze Age in date.

A partly-cortical flint flake, with cortex at the distal end and mesial ridge of the dorsal face. On the right side is the negative scar off a flake lost in a previous strike. The flake has been retouched on the left side and also on the distal and left edges of the ventral face. Retouch is short and regular. The bulb of percussion on the ventral surface is pronounced; the flake was caused by a hard hammer strike. Utilised as a cutting tool. Neolithic to Early Bronze Age in date.

A partly-cortical flint flake, with cortex on the left side of the dorsal face. The flake has been retouched on the right edge of both faces. Retouch is short and irregular. The bulb of percussion on the ventral surface is quite subtle, perhaps indicating a soft hammer strike. The artefact was probably utilised as a knife. Neolithic to Early Bronze Age in date.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. The arrowhead was made from an orangey flint, with bands of darker brown-orange. There is retouch around the edges on both faces, although very little flaking in the faces' centres. The distal edge curves away from the main body, which itself has a pronounced ridge towards one of the sides of one of the edges. The barbs of the flint are pointed. This fact and the size of the arrowhead suggest that it is of the Sutton type, common in the early Bronze Age (Green 1980, 117-143). The arrowhead's tang was broken in antiquity, as were the distal point an…

A beautiful and well preserved example of a flint knife, dating from the Bronze Age. The knife measures 63.4 mm long, 23 mm wide, and is lozengiform in section. The artefact is bi-faced, with fine invasive retouch on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces. The fine workmanship was achieved by pressure flaking, probably using a bone or antler tool. The flint itself is of a mottled grey colour. The quality of craftsmanship implies that this artefact dates to the earlier Bronze Age, as there is evidence that there is a decline in technical competency throughout the Bronze Age (Bond 'Guide …

Object type: SIDE SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint side and end scraper formed from a large flake of dark grey to ochre flint. Some cortex remains on the distal end of the dorsal face. The large striking platform and bulb of percussion are clearly visible at the proximal end. A notch on the right mesial edge of the dorsal face is seemingly incidental to this artefact, and does not appear to have been utilised. The size of this flake indicates that it is Neolithic to Bronze Age in date. The generic style exhibited in such scrapers in the later prehistoric period makes it impossible to detemine a date with any more accuracy.

A prehistoric flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. The arrowhead is made from a pale brown flint, transparent at the edges where fine craftsmanship is exhibited. The arrowhead is bifacially retouched with invasive working. The artefact fits in with the Conygar Hill type of arrowhead illustrated in Green 'The Flint Arrowheads of the British Isles' (1980, page 123; fig 46). Such arrowheads are dated to the earlier Beaker period, at the transition between the Neolithic Early Bronze Age. It therefore dates from around 1950 to 1800 BC. The arrowhead is unfortunately missing one of its tangs, …

A flint flake, retouched and utilised as a tool, probably a wedge for splitting wood. The flint has retouch around the entire perimiter and invasive retouch on the dorsal side. The ventral surface of the flake has some cortex remaining. Opposing edge damage is suggestive of the use of the flint as a wedge. The flint itself is of a grey to light brown colour. The tool was probably used during the later Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.

A flint flake, retouched and utilised as a tool, and possibly originally hafted into a handle. The left edge of the dorsal surface is retouched to form a cutting edge and the right edge has denticulated retouch, possibly for use in a sawing action. The flake is broken mid way through the bulb of percussion, as a result of imperfections in the flint. It may have broken as a result of having been hafted, having snapped where the handle joined. The flint is pale grey to brown in colour. A tiny amount of cortex remains on the right edge of the dorsal surface, at the distal end. The flint w…

A flint flake, retouched and utilised as a tool. The flake has been retouched on both of its side edges. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are both clearly visible. An inverted notch at the distal end may have been a deliberate gouging design. The flint is pale grey to brown in colour. The flint was probably utilised during the late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.

A flint end scraper. The end scraper has retouched edges at the distal end and edge plunting around the proximal end to make it more comfortable to hold. The tool is constructed from a primary flake, as the dorsal surface has a substantial amount of pale creamy coloured cortex remaining. The flint is dark grey to brown in colour beneath the cortex. The scraper was probably fabricated in the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age.
