Object type: PURSE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy object, possibly a post-medieval purse bar. The object is 39.5 mm long. It has a circular hole in the centre, 5 mm in diameter, through which a bar or piece of fabric was presumably once passed. Either side of this hole the frame becomes rectangular, and is at angle to the circular centre of the object. The frame is open, creating two rectangular loops to either side, and on an angle to the plane of the central, circular loop. These rectangular loops are 12 x 6 mm in dimension. Once again, these loops were presumably for attachment, either for suspension of the object, o…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy medieval buckle frame. The frame is oval with a forked spacer, although the forks of the spacer are broken at 7 mm from the frame. The corroded remains of an iron pin are evident in the space between the two spacer forks. The buckle is slightly rounded on the obverse and flat on the reverse. The buckle is similar to examples illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, page 79; fig 323) which is dated to between 1350 and 1400. This example is likely to be of a similar date.

A late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch. The brooch consists of a long bow (58 mm in length) which would have originally bowed in a continuous curve, although it is now damaged and bent out of shape. The wings of the brooch are 14 mm wide. The head of the brooch would have originally had an integral sping and over-head chord hook. However the chord hook is broken and the spring, which would have been located under the rear of the chord hook, is missing. Very little of the brooch's catch plate remains. The brooch is similar to an example illustrated in Ha…

A copper-alloy strap fitting. The fitting consists of a single loop, which is D-shaped. On the flat side of the loop is a projection, 3 mm long, circular in section, and 1.5 mm in diameter. This presumably attached the loop to an object, possibly a small casket or other light item of furniture. The object is likely to be medieval to post-medieval in date.
