Object type: PURSE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy object, possibly a post-medieval purse bar. The object is 39.5 mm long. It has a circular hole in the centre, 5 mm in diameter, through which a bar or piece of fabric was presumably once passed. Either side of this hole the frame becomes rectangular, and is at angle to the circular centre of the object. The frame is open, creating two rectangular loops to either side, and on an angle to the plane of the central, circular loop. These rectangular loops are 12 x 6 mm in dimension. Once again, these loops were presumably for attachment, either for suspension of the object, o…

Object type: JEWS HARP
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy Jews' Harp. The instrument consists of a rounded head and arms which measure 36 mm in length and are angled inwards. The head and arms are diamond shaped in section. One one side, in the centre, the head has a rabbet into which an iron tongue (now missing) was once hammered. This iron tongue would have been twanged to create a sound whilst the rounded head was held lightly between the player's teeth. The total length of the instrument is 57 mm. Similar examples are illustrated in Bailey (1995, pages 76 to 77; figs 4-5). Jews' harps are known to be indigenous to South-Eas…

Object type: SPUR
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A broken part from a copper-alloy post-medieval spur. The remains of the spur consist of a double loop at the end of broken bar. The loops would originally have been used to fasten the spur around the front of the ankle. The break on the bar of the spur has occurred before the projection upon which the rowel would have been placed. The remains of the bar are slightly curved to fit to the wearers leg. This artefact is similar to a number of examples illustrated in Bailey (1995, pages 94-95; figs 20 - 33). It probably dates from the 17th or 18th century.

A cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular shoe buckle with a drilled frame for a separate iron spindle. The buckle is decorated at each end with a chevron with incised diagonal lines. The buckle pin is broken, although a cast copper-alloy stud chape remains. On the reverse of the stud chape is a makers mark which appears to read C COX although this may be incorrect as it is fairly worn. The buckle is a shoe buckle and dates from around 1690 to 1720. Similar examples are illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 102; figs 656, 659, 660).

Copper-alloy artefact consisting of a strip of metal which narrows before terminating in a hook, through which a ring of copper-alloy is passed. The sub-rectangular strip has an incurved wider, upper edge, and just below this is a decorative transverse groove. Copper-alloy strap-fitting consisting of a strip of metal which narrows before terminating in a hook, through which a ring of copper-alloy is passed. The sub-rectangular strip has an incurved wider end and is punched to hold two iron rivets, for mounting the artefact on to another item, likely to be of leather. The mount and hook measure 38.7 mm in length and 12.7 mm wide. The loop measures 11.6 mm in diameter. A casting flash runs around the side of the loop.

A plain, tinned copper-alloy buckle. The buckle is double looped and trapezoidal in shape. There are lobed protrusions at either end of the bar. The outside edge of the buckle is bevelled. Otherwise complete, the buckle’s pin is missing. The buckle is post-medieval and dates from around 1620 to 1680. Whilst undecorated, in form the buckle is similar to an example illustrated in Whitehead (1996, page 82; fig. 514). In profile one end of the buckle appears raised, perhaps due to plough damage.
