Cast copper alloy finger ring formed from a fragment of bracelet. It has an internal diameter of 18.14mm. The piece has tapering sides, ranging in width from 8.33mm at one terminal to 5mm at the other. At its wider terminal it is decorated with a central line of small circular indents, with an incised or moulded line either side, and a series of ring-and-dot motifs alternating with sub-triangular indents down either edge. This zone of decoration then gives way to two large ring-and-dot motifs, separated by incised transverse lines. The rest of the length is then decorated with a ce…

A Medieval gold finger-ring, now mis-shapen. The hoop is of rectangular section, and is engraved with sprigs of foliage and a black-letter inscription which is difficult to decipher, but which has been read by Dr Malcolm Jones as +honour et cuer (honour and heart). The ring may have been a marriage ring or a love token, and probably dates to the 15th century.

A Roman gold finger ring of 'keeled' type of Henig Type VIII which generally dates to the 3rd century AD. The plain D-section hoop widens into triangular shoulders, decorated with three flutes. On the lower inside of the band there is a small fold in the metal, but the ring is in good condition and unworn. The ring is mounted with a prominent oval bezel consisting of a dark red carnelian intaglio encased within a box setting. The intaglio portrays in profile, a standing winged figure, probably Victory, facing left. It is rendered in a crude style but some detail can be made out in the…

Description: The ring consists of a short, plain rod, the ends of which have been drawn out, bent round and overlapped, then hammered flat together to form an irregular circle, which is thicker at the front; diameter: 22 mm. There is a deep nick on one side which was cut in antiquity, probably with the point of a knife to test that it was not plated. Similar nicks are often seen on silver ingots of the Viking period. Discussion: Rings which have simply overlapped ends and are thicker at the front are typical of the Viking period e.g. from Gotland, Sweden (L. Thunmark-NylĂ©n, 1998, …

Cast copper alloy finger ring of Medieval date. The ring is 18.26mm in diameter, 4.85mm thick and weighs 2.1 grams. The raised bezel area at the top of the hoop is in the form of a moulded buckle and strap. The hoop overlaps the buckle loop on one side, and is underneath on the other side, as if emulating a fastened belt. The buckle frame is a single loop D shape. The buckle pin is slender and is raised above the hoop slightly. The ring has a pale green patina and is slightly corroded. Other finger-rings emulating a belt have been recorded, for example NLM5292 and SUSS-53F3D8, however …
