Copper alloy strap fitting, possibly from a harness. The fitting consists of a half-round sectioned shank, with a sub-rectangular loop at one terminal. The opposite half of the shank has a thickened, ribbed section, with two copper alloy rivets through it. The rust-red patina of the copper alloy is suggestive of an 11th century date for this object.

Setting from an Anglo-Saxon composite disc brooch. The setting appears to consist of a dome of white material, with a band of gold ropework running around its diameter. Four strips of gold ropework run from this band up towards the centre of the dome, which has a circular setting of similar ropework, which may have formed a setting for a gem stone (now missing). This object has been identified from a photograph only, but clearly represents a central setting of Avent's Class 4 (Avent 1975). Similar central settings occur on composite disc brooches from Milton, Monkton, Sarre and Favers…

Cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon button-type or small disc brooch. The brooch is circular, with a central circular garnet setting surrounded by a zone of Style I animal art, which is gilded. The outer edge of the brooch comprises a low, flattish, rim, about 1.6mm across. The upper surface of most of the rim is worn, but in a few places remains of a thin black inlay in a zig-zag pattern is visible. This is almost certainly niello. Part of a hinge and catchplate survive on the reverse, but no trace of the pin is present. The Style I animal art comprises two complete 'quadrupeds' with le…

Gold and cloisonné garnet setting from the tongue plate of a high status buckle. The setting is sub-rectangular with curved cutaways defining the shoulders. It is made with a sheet gold back plate to which is soldered a single strip of gold sheet set on edge to form a frame for the cloisonné cell work. This is inlaid with well cut garnets over pointillé foil and fills the panel with a design of two skilfully entwined snakes: their heads with well defined open jaws fill the lower corners and their sinuous bodies interlace across the centre of the panel to end in tails tucked beneath…

Cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount. The mount is an example of Williams Class B, Type 2, Group 1; this group comprises mounts with two central animal heads arranged in tiers, flanked by inward-looking, open mouthed animals sitting on their haunches. This example, which is incomplete, missing part of the flange, appears to be from the same mould as no. 411 in Williams 1997, an example from Tangmere in West Sussex.

Copper alloy Anglo-Saxon small long brooch. The brooch, which is complete apart from its iron pin, comprises a square headplate with 'T-shaped' projections from the top and side, giving it a cruciform appearance. These projections, two of which are broken, each have a transverse zig-zag decoration on them, whilst the headplate itself has decoration comprising incised circles and half-circles. An integral lug on the reverse of the headplate forms the hinge; this is encrusted with the remains of the iron spring. The bow has rectangular-sectioned ends, and a longitudinal groove down m…

Copper alloy Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. Foot and catchplate only survive, with a worn transverse break at the junction of the foot and bow. The decoration on the front of the brooch comprises a raised transverse line just below the break, a space and then a similar line. Below this is a zone of three transverse ridges, which form the neck of the zoomorphic (horse) head which comprises the terminal of the brooch. The snout of the animal head flares out and has a very rounded end. This brooch, which is somewhat encrusted with corrosion, is likely to date to the 2nd half of the 5t…

The head itself comprises a pair of eyebrows which join to form a logitudinal ridge down the nose, which terminates is a snout formed by two opposed triangular sections. The eyes of the animal are formed by two raised dots. There is no trace of a catchplate on the reverse; presumably this was present higher up the foot.
