Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy circular uniface coin weight, 14mm in diameter, 2.6mm thick and weighing 49.7gr (3.22g). This is a half noble weight of the Crown and Lis series, issued after 1421 and valid until about 1464. It predates the more common copper alloy representional weights. The crown and lis are applied with separate punches. Between these stamps there is a small depression in the centre of the weight which must have some connection with flan production. Ref. Withers cf.107

Double patard of Charles the Bold, for Flanders, c.1467-74. Double patards were exactly equivalent to English groats and were made legal tender in England and Wales in 1469. They show up in hoards down to the 1530s and presumably finally disappeared during the Henrician debasements of the early 1540s.
