A Bear Jeton alluding to Languedoc from southwestern France. The bear was a local emblem that had no links with French regal coin designs, but instead alluded to a legendary beast (Malle Beste) which roamed the night in Toulouse. This suggests that bear jetons were struck for local use. This trading token shows a bear walking left on all four limbs with three surrounding flowers, which are thought to represent a field. The inscription around the edge reads +CEST : LA MALLE : BEST. The reverse side depicts a triple straight cross fleuretty within a four arched tressure. An exact example…

An eighteenth century brass token dated to [1723]. The reverse side illustrates a picture of Britannia facing left with the inscription ‘BRITAN’ to her left hand side and ‘NIA’ to her right. The bottom of the token indicates the possible date as [1723] although centuries of wear have blurred the numbers. The obverse side illustrates the head of George I (1714-27) facing right, with the inscription ‘GEORIVS’ on his left hand side and [E] ‘EX’ to his right. A similar example can be found in Seaby. 1973: 201.

A seventeenth century halfpenny minted during Charles II reign (1648-72). Under the Commonwealth there was no authorised copper coinage. As a result farthings, halfpennies and some pennies, were issued by towns and traders (Seaby. 1973: 180). On the reverse side of this example a square grid with sixteen square holes occupies the centre and is encircled by a dotted relief. An inscription occupies the outer rim. The obverse side has the letters ‘W’ ‘H’ ‘B’ which form a triangle, separated from each other by three five leafed flowers. Underneath the letters there is a ½…

A lead token of probable 17th to 18th century AD date. The token is sub-circular and has a raised outer rim on one side. This side (the obverse) is decorated with the crudely depicted design of a deer standing and facing right. The reverse has the letters "L T". The surfaces are worn and corroded. It measures 22.6mm diameter by 2.3mm thick and weighs 6.19g.
