A complete lead decorated spindle whorl, conical in shape with a central circular perforation. It measures 13mm in height and 22mm in width. It is decorated with two bands of projecting circular knops, the upper band (at the tapering terminal end) are much more prominent than the lower one. Spindle whorls change little in form from the Roman to the end of the medieval periods, this spindle whorl could therefore be Roman or later in date.

A fragment lead seal matrix, over half of which is now missing due to old breaks. This seal matrix appears to have originally have been circular in shape and measured c36mm in diameter. Projecting from one edge is the remains of an integral suspension loop. The front face is decorated with what was originally a fleur de lis with smaller stalks terminating in fleur de lis inbetween the main lobes. The border inscription which remains begins with a cross patty and reads; SIGILL[ ]VLI. This seal matrix is likely to have been a personal one and dates to the 13th century.

Small lead octagonal weight, probably for weighing coins or for an apothecary. It is 14mm long by 12.5mm wide, therefore sub-rectangular with the corner cut off to form an irregular or elongated octogon. Thickness 1.8mm. The edges are chamfered and the base is plain. The upper surface is divided into four quadrants, two (adjacent) containing three raised pellets and the other two containing each a single larger pellet. The resemblance to the triple pellets of the long cross coinage suggests strongly that this is a coin weight relating to coinage of the period c.1240-c.1480. Its weight …

Lead cloth seal In the form of two large discs 29mm in diameter: the 'tongue' or rivet of one has passed through the centre of the other and has been pressed down to the level of its surface when the seal impression was stamped upon it. The seal consists of a circular frame with the letters BH within, with a tall bar, possibly the upright of a tall thin T, between. Below these letters appears a form like 'XX', though in fact this is a V with an inverted V over it, on the apex of which the tall central upright bar is standing. That is therefore probably the merchant mark. Probably 17th-…

An incomplete Roman lead steelyard weight, roughly half of this weight now survives the rest is missing due to old breaks. It would have been biconical in shape originally and is now conical. It measures 23mm in surviving height and 29mm in width. There is a shaft of corroded iron running through its centre and projecting slightly from the complete terminal end which would orignally have formed a loop. There is likely to have been two loops originally; one loop would have been for suspension and the other one to suspend the object being weighed. Similar steelyard weights have been…

A worn lead pointed oval shaped seal matrix measuring 35mm in length and c25mm in width. On the reverse at one point of the oval shape there is an incomplete suspension loop, roughly half of which is missing due to old breaks. On the front face there is a central flower motif and around this a border legend. This legend is worn and appears to read; S'MABILI E(/C?) FOL(?)AT, meaning 'the seal of Mabel Efolat(?); the second half of the name is very unclear and the 'e' and the 'l' may not be correct. This is therefore a personal seal matrix belonging to the individual named in the inscription

A complete worn crude lead seal matrix likely to be medieval circa 13th century date. This matrix is flat and circular in shape measuring 38mm in diameter. On the reverse there is a central integral cylindrical projection, now bent to one side, 15mm in length and 8mm in width. It is possibly complete or part of an incomplete loop, it is too worn to be certain. The area where the projection joins the circular die of the matrix is distorted and has open cracks through it, the shape of these correspond to a central flat topped shield shaped motif on the front face, it is possible that…

A lead medieval circa 13th century seal matrix. Circular in shape and now slightly distorted measuring c29.8mm in diameter. One face has a incised six petalled flower in its centre and a border inscription. This inscription is now very worn and appears to read, S' WILTI P/T U [ ]VIRH, the letters are a mixture of upper and lower case. The inscription is likely to be an individuals name and this seal matrix to be a personal seal, some of the letters may be misread as they are very unclear, therefore the name itself is not known. On the reverse face of this seal matrix there is a e…
