Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy seal matrix. This seal matrix is sub circular in plan and flat in section. The die face is badly worn with some damage, but it is possible to see what may be the negative design of a cockerel with a plumed tail. Nothing remains of an inscription, if there was one at all. The reverse of the matrix is plain. A central rib runs along the length of the die and this is now worn and abraded. The loop is missing and all that remains are the lower portions. The seal die has a diameter of 17.36mm and is 3.56mm thick. The object weighs 3.81g. Given the impersonal na…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of cast copper alloy Bronze Age socketed spear. This fragment represents the very tip of the spearhead. It is triangular in plan and lenticular in section. The spear tip has a median rib, which would have continued down the body of the spearhead. The fragment is solid, except for a short, circular hollow shaft in the broad end of the tip, which represents the very end of the hollow socket. This has an internal diameter of 7.34mm. The object has received damage along one edge, which runs onto the rib and it is also split up the rib either side. Edges are worn suggesting this da…

Incomplete copper alloy, one piece ‘Colchester’ type Romano-British brooch. The wings of the brooch are complete but worn to both sides. The forward facing hook is truncated and worn. Behind the head of the brooch, below the remains of the forward facing hook, is a short downward facing ‘hook’ that is presumably the remains of the integral spring coil. The spring coil and pin shaft are otherwise entirely missing. The bow is subcircular in section with a flattened behind. It is complete and ends in a blunt point. It is now bent with a ninety degree down turn at the top. The catc…

North Thames (Catuvellauni/Trinovantes) or Kent (Cantii). Copper alloy unit, possibly of Addedomaros. Philip de Jersey notes that it is unlisted in any of the major catalogues although this brings the total known to six. The obverse on this example reveals for the first time the wreath around the boar; this has intriguing parallels on Kentish coinage, but is not something usually associated with the North Thames.

Incomplete copper alloy ‘Wessex type La Tène I’, one piece Iron Age brooch. The head of the brooch is now missing, but would once have comprised of an integral four coil spring head that would have then extended into the pin shaft. An upward pointing, pointed knop is all that remains of this construction. The bow of the brooch is distinctively arched with a flared C shape profile. It is subrectangular in section, and tapers to either end. The foot of the brooch is incomplete and now points straight down, with the remains of the catchplate curl. Complete copper alloy terminal or knife-stop from a post medieval knife. This terminal is formed from a single sheet of metal. If laid flat out, the object would have a central flat, sub-circular disc from which extends two opposing rectangular arms. These arms have been folded down from the disc at 90 degrees so that the form the walls of the terminal. They have been curved, and just about meet, so that they roughly echo the sides of the subcircular disc. Each of the rectangular side sections has been incised with a cross. In the lower angle of each cross is a circular perforation for…

Incomplete copper alloy medieval buckle plate. This object is formed from two plates, rectangular in plan and flat in section. The front plate is damaged at one short end, but it is possible to see four surviving rivet holes and a damaged fifth hole at the broken end. There is a hole at each corner and one set in the centre. A copper alloy rivet survives in the central hole and in the bottom right hand corner (when viewed with the damaged end to the left). These join with the back plate, in effect creating a sandwich space between the plates. The back plate is much more damaged than th…

Incomplete, cast copper alloy Late Bronze Age pegged spearhead. The socket of the spearhead is essentially conical, having a circular section, and tapering into the rib of the blade. The once leaf-shaped blade (probably elliptical) is very worn down and little more than two flanges, that represent the lower blade survive. The surviving tip of the object is truncated and a small circular hole at the tip shows the cross section of the circular mid rib. Further damage from this truncation exists in a crack that runs from the broken tip for approximately 10mm down onto the rib. The side of…
