Copper alloy button or strap stud, probably from a horses harness. The button has a flat disc head with a slightly raised central hollow circle. The centre of the hollow circle appears to contain some kind of solder or other substance that might indicate that it once containined a small piece of enamel or coral. Surrounding the central circle are three incised bands. There is a short, pierced rectangular shank on the reverse. There are many file marks visible on the reverse of the stud. The thickness of the disc head is 1mm. The shank on the reverse tapers slightly from 1.5mm th…

Incomplete probable harness ring. The object consists of an solid oval-sectioned iron ring with bronze casing, which has split as the iron has expanded due to corrosion. This splitting is visible along the internal and external line of the ring, which obscures the details regarding whether the copper alloy casing was U-shaped and hammered round, or a complete cylinder. The external surface of the bronze casing is decorated with transverse ribbing. The object is similar to a simple terret ring found with two other probable harness rings and two terret rings in a context dating to circa…

Incomplete copper alloy vessel spout. The spout is zoomorphic and in the form of an Ox head. The head is smooth, undecorated and slightly pitted. From the forehead sweep two circular sectioned horns, one complete and the other incomplete. The complete horn curves upwards and forwards into a semi-circle, slightly tapering until it meets a bulbous terminal. This bulbous feature may be representing a horn cap, thus indicating their use on the horns of live animals. The other horn begins as the complete one does, however a short way along it suffered some damage in antiquity and now …

A worn cast copper-alloy late Iron Age to Roman Colchester brooch dating to 25-60 AD. The head of the brooch is similar to the trumpet head, though not as rounded. Behind the head are the remains of a spring mechanism with a rearward claw. Most of the spring is heavily worn. The thin bow is plain and tapers to a pointed foot. The brooch is in bad condition as most of the green copper-alloy surface is removed to a red core. The bow is now twisted and the foot is bent backwards at an angle. The catchplate is missing. The surviving length is 64.9mm, the width of the head is 9.8mm and the …
