County: East Sussex

An unidentifiable object, which could be either made of lead or copper alloy. It is possible that this object is simply a waste scrap of metal. The object has been formed from one solid piece of metal. It is roughly triangular in shape, with a crudely shaped projection coming away from the point of the triangle. The broken ends are very worn and the surface of the mid brownish-green metal is irregular.

Approximately 58 square centimetres of undecorated sheet copper alloy in four fragments. Date unknown. Thickness 0.56mm. Overall weight 31.65g. The larger fragment has part of a finished straight edge. About 10mm in from this edge are two complete circular perforations that have a diameter of about 4mm. There is evidence for a third and similar perforation at the edge of the break. The centres of the perforations are about 32mm apart. The second largest fragment has two finished straight edges which form a corner. One of the edges has two similar perforations about 10mm from the edge.…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Complete copper alloy finger ring of unknown date. The hoop is deformed and sub-oval rather than circular in shape, consequently, the external diameter cannot be accurately measured. However, the diameter would have been approximately 18mm. The width of the hoop varies slightly but is about 4.5mm. The thickness is about 0.5mm. Weight 1.66g. The hoop is decorated on the outer surface with regularly spaced curvilinear grooves. The ring is in fair condition and has a dark green patina with small areas of bright green corrosion deposits.

An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object. This object consists of a roughly circular flat terminal with a shaft projecting from the centre of one edge of this. It measures 40mm in surviving length and c17mm in diameter across its terminal end and c5mm in width across the shaft. The terminal has a central circular hole through and surrounding which there is a mass of corroded iron, especially on one face. This is presumably the remains of an iron rivet/shaft of some sort. The incomplete integral shaft has a flat back face and a slightly rounded front face there are also possi…

A cast copper-alloy unidentified object, consisiting of a hollow tube measuring 54mm in length and 32.5mm in width at its widest point. It has a circular cross-section, either end is an open terminal 23mm in external diameter, the middle of the object is swollen to a diameter of 32.5mm and has a projecting ridge around it. There is a fragment missing due to an old break at one terminal and a few small holes, also most likely to be due to old damage can be seen. No parallel could be found for this object and both its date and function are unknown.

Cast lead object with decorated surface. The function of this object is unclear, it is circular with a domed top surface which has a raised cast decoration. A raised central pellet is surrounded by a circle from which spokes are radiating at varying angles. On one edge of the object there is a rough lump of lead which has not been cleanly removed. The reverse of the object is largely flat but there are substantial deposits of lead which would normally have been removed or cast off. The object may be some sort of casting trial piece. The object weighs 35.9g and measures 32.6mm in lengt…

Probably a cast lead weight. The object is sub-circular with a virtually central circular perforation. The lower face is virtually flat while the upper face is concave. The artefact is heavily worn, pitted and corroded. It is almost impossible to date such an object outside of a stratified archaeological context.

A spherical cast lead weight with the remains of an iron spike extending from the centre. The iron spike could once have formed part of a handle or loop; it measures 19.87mm in length and is badly rusted. The weight is undecorated, but appears to be well worn. The weight is complete, apart form the iron spike that appears to have been broken. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour. Due to a lack of excavated examples these weights must remain undated.

An unidentified copper-alloy object. The artefact appears to be a broken frame of some sort, possibly a fitting or handle for an implement or maybe a strap end or chape. A published parallel has not yet been discovered. The object consists of a frame with an open loop in the centre. The frame is broken at one end, and the loop between the two bars is missing. The frame is quite thick, and one bar is decorated with incised lines. The other bar appears to have been undecorated, but is broken and the majority of it is missing.
