A lead plug for the repair of a damaged vessel. The plug has a groove where it was fitted to the wall of the broken object. Such plugs were in use from at least the Roman period until the post-medieval period, and without the presence of any diagnostic pottery are impossible to date.

An iron implement, probably a surgical or dental tool. The object is 95 mm long and has a curved hook at each end, one at a right angle and one curving back into the shaft at an angle of 300 degrees. The shaft of the implement is circular in section and tapers from 4 mm to 0.7 mm. The object is currently of an uncertain date.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A sub-circular lead object, probably a weight. The weight is pierced in the centre with a small hole (2.5 mm in diameter), possibly to pass a line through. The object itself is 34.1 mm in diameter and weighs 30.3 grams. It is undecorated on both sides. Such artefacts are difficult to date outside a stratified archaeological context.

County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cut fragment of a lead object, probably a weight. The weight is pierced in the centre with a small hole (3.5 mm in diameter), possibly to pass a line through. The object is sub-triangular and curved on one edge, suggesting that it is a cut portion from a circular item. It is undecorated on both sides. Such artefacts are difficult to date outside a stratified archaeological context.

Object type: PIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy pin head which is biconical in shape with a median band. The shaft of the pin is missing, although what remains is circular in section. The pin head measures 7 mm in diameter. Minute traces of gilding survive. Such pins are very difficult to date when found outside a stratified archaeological context, and the pin may range in date from Roman to post-medieval.

A copper-alloy head of an implement, quite possibly a stylus for use on wax tablets. The object is broken and is missing most of its shaft and tip. The head is globular and the broken shaft is oval in section. The remains of the object are 24.3 mm long and 10.8 mm wide at the head, decreasing to 5.3 mm wide at the shaft. The date of the object is difficult to ascertain.

County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy ring, probably a finger ring. The ring is undecorated. There is a small ridge at one point where the ring has been soldered together. The external diameter of the ring is 24.3, the internal diameter is 20.1. Such rings are difficult to date when diagnostic features are absent.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy mount. The mount is apparently a broken portion of a rectangular mount with two at least two rivet holes. Both of these rivet holes are broken and a narrow 'bridge' of the artefact runs between them, until it too is broken. The obverse of the mount has traces of gilding remaining. The reverse is unadorned. It is difficult to determine the function of such a fragmentary artefact, and a date is likewise hard to establish.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The mount is cut from a very thin piece of metal. It appears to take the form of a highly stylised canine face, either a fox or a wolf. The eyes are formed from two openwork sub-triangles. Sub-rectangular knopped ears are located to either side of an angular band that runs horizontally above the eyes. The muzzle is formed as the general sub-triangular form of the mount reaches its apex. The angular form of the object is unusual and no parallel for the artefact has yet been found. Its date is therefore uncertain.

Probably a cast lead weight. The object is sub-circular with a virtually central circular perforation. The lower face is virtually flat while the upper face is concave. The artefact is heavily worn, pitted and corroded. It is almost impossible to date such an object outside of a stratified archaeological context.

Workflow stage: Published Find published
An unidentified copper-alloy object. The artefact appears to be a broken frame of some sort, possibly a fitting or handle for an implement or maybe a strap end or chape. A published parallel has not yet been discovered. The object consists of a frame with an open loop in the centre. The frame is broken at one end, and the loop between the two bars is missing. The frame is quite thick, and one bar is decorated with incised lines. The other bar appears to have been undecorated, but is broken and the majority of it is missing. Both bars are perforated at the complete end, to allow somethi…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An uncertain cast copper-alloy object. The object consists of a thin twisting piece of copper-alloy with flat sub-circular lugs at each end. Each of these lugs are perforated, and the corroded remains of iron rivets remain in these perforations. The object was therefore evidently once attached to something, possibly an item of furniture, and possibly as a suspension loop. It is possible that the twisting nature of the object is a result of post-depositional damage, and that it was once straight. No published parallels have been discovered, and this artefact is, for the time being, a m…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A large circular coin or token. The coin is slightly too large to be a Roman sestertius, with a diameter of 37.3 mm and does not seem thick enough (3.5 mm). However, it is not a milled coin and it is quite irregular, and is thus not one of the large coins of the milled coinage of the 18th or 19th centuries. It seems more likely that this is a token of some sort. Both obverse and reverse of the object are worn and indiscernible. A date is therefore very difficult to determine.

An incomplete circular cast lead object, probably a spindle whorl. The whorl is discoidal in form and rectangular (with rounded corners) in section with a flat base and top. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact measures 35.1mm in diameter with a large spindle hole with a diameter of 12.0mm. The object has suffered from a break which is evidenced by a fracture seam which runs diagonally up the side. Just less than one half of one of the faces has been lost, both in terms of thickness and surface area. What remains of the spindle whorl is very worn and distorted on both faces. The …

A fragment of an copper-alloy object. The fragmented nature of the object makes it very difficult to identify. The object is flat with a raised decorative ridge on one side, giving it a semi-circular look with wings when viewed in cross section. The remaining decoration takes the form of three separate bands comprised of a series of ribs. Tiny traces of gilding are just visible in the gaps between the bands. The reverse of the object has the remains of a lug, presumably for attachment purposes. This object has not been dated.
