Object type: NUT CRACKERS
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy hinged nutcracker dating to the late post-medieval period. One of the arms is missing following old damage; the other arm has been bent back on itself. The clamp measures 24mm in length. Its interior is not visible from the record provided (see notes, below), but would have presumably have featured indentations to grip the nut. Similarly, any decoration on the outer faces of the clamp is indiscernible. The extant handle is circular in section and features two groups of two transverse mouldings enclosing a moulding with closely-set longitudinal lines. T…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete elaborate cast copper-alloy buckle frame dating to the late post-medieval period, probably the 18th century. Sub-rectangular double-loop in form with moulded lion's head and mane motif at either end forming a trapezoidal frame. Asymmetrical, as the lions' heads both face in the same direction. Gently convex in profile. Semi-circular facets waving along outer edge of frame. The pin is missing on this example. In the literature there is a document of one such buckle in Murawski (2003, 579; ref. P12-0104). There are also a number of parallels which have been recorded on t…

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and broken cast copper-alloy artefact of uniface decoration and formerly square shape - probably a coin weight. Following old damage the weight is now sub-rectangular in shape. The design borne by the upper face is difficult to discern but appears to feature a shield flanked by a serpent and surmounted by an unidentifiable object. The design sits within a rectangular border. The weight probably dates to the post-medieval period, although the coin with which it was associated is unidentified.

The forked spacer plate from an incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy composite buckle. It features a plain D-shaped frame with a pointed moulded lip rather than a pin notch. In section the frame is the shape of a right angled triangle with rounded corners; the reverse is flat. There is a notch in the frame which holds the extant pin. The pin is cast and is of triangular, flanged shape. The forker spacer continues for 27.2mm. Each prong has been bent out of alignment; one has been broken after 24mm. This latter has been bent upwards and round. The plates have been lost. Such buckles d…

A corroded cast copper-alloy mount dating to the post-medieval period, with gold-coloured patina remaining in places. This mount takes the elaborate form of a scallop shell with lower trefoil protrusion and upper moulded protrusion. The scallop is divided into seven section through grooving - three either side of a larger central section. The trefoil protrudes from below the central section. A complete cast copper-alloy hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The artefact has survived well and all of its attributes are intact: curved hook, circular body, rectangular attachment loop. The circular tag has a beaded border and two raised perpendicular lines dividing it into quarters. Elsewhere this has been described as a cross where each arm terminates in a trefoil. The field within each quarter is perforated with four circles: one towards the small central 'boss', three around the circumference - a total of sixteen perforations for the object. A worn cast lead vessel which has been crushed out of its original form. It is of open form and semicircular section, intended to lean against (or be attached to) a vertical surface. The vessel flares out as its sides ascend; the flaring is more pronounced above a pair of longitudinal lines around two-thirds up the vessel's side. The lines are moulded in low relief. At the base the vessel is 41.9mm in length, expanding to 76.9mm at the top. The majority of the surface of the vessel is covered with off-white corrosion product. An iron socketed spearhead of broadly medieval date. Though corroded, the artefact survives relatively well and the angular blade shape can be clearly discerned. The blade turns in after 115-120mm at an angle of approximately 140 degrees. Beyond the blade tapers to a width of 14.3mm at its junction with the socket. The blade is flat with a shallow lozengiform section. The socket expands to a hollow circular section of diameter 24.3mm over a length of 100mm. The socket is broken at its terminal across 13.6mm. If this socket was once split, a trait indicative of an Anglo- Saxon date, th…
