A copper alloy dolphin brooch with undecorated wings partly enclosing the corrosion from the top of the iron pin. A narrow rib rises from the spring anchoring lug and runs a short way (10.5mm) down the triangular sectioned bow. The catchplate is present but the way the brooch had been mounted meant that it was not possible to see the foot. (17.19 across wings)

A worn and flattened copper alloy Hod Hill brooch. The wings consist of the top T shape, folded over on itself, with a slot cut out for the now missing pin. The bow of the brooch consists of a panel with linear moulding then an undecorated panel with triangular extensions and a small knop on each side. This is edged with two transverse mouldings from which spring the splayed foot of the brooch. On the reverse only part of the catchplate survives. This decorative layout is slightly different from the usual Hod Hill brooch in that the side knops are often on the upper linear moulded area…

A worn copper-alloy tutulus brooch (Hattatt, ref 539). A circular plate brooch, 28.2mm in diameter, that has a raised outer rim with six small lugs, spaced at regular intervals around the outside edge. Four of these lugs are purely decorative, but two lugs directly opposite each other, are integrally moulded with, and conceal, the pin housing and the catchplate. Just inside the raised rim are a pair of shallow concentric grooves incised upon a hollow conical body (approx 1.5mm thick) which rises 8mm and terminates in a flat central disk 9mm dia. This central disk is punctuated with a r…

This is surrounded by a flat border with seven circular lugs which have a raised circle around a depression. Two of the depressions have worn through and another lug is broken across the hole. The hinged pin and catchplate are present on the concave back. Bayley & Butcher (2004 p173)suggests that these umbonate brooches were popular in the 1st century AD.

A worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, probably a Hod Hill/Aucissa variant, dating from around the mid 1st century AD. The extant brooch consists of the bow from below the head down to the foot; the head, spring and pin are missing, so far as can be discerned from the image provide (see notes, below). Similarly, it is hard to state how far the catchplate has survived, if it has at all. As stated, it appears that the brooch was broken below the head. At this point it is 6mm wide and continues at this width for 11mm. It appears from the image that it is decorated wi…
