Unseen, recorded from impression only. Lead, vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, simple cast fleur-de-lys design on reverse, with intact suspension loop. Device: a cross, the vertical limbs being ears of corn, the horizontal plain. Two small subsidiary ears of corn (or stylized iris petals) either side of the top limb. The lower limb is not entirely clear, but appears to have a person standing in front of it, facing left and holding a longbow in front of him. Device separated from legend by a broken line; a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix face. Legend: +S' MARGE…

Substantial lead alloy vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix. Back bears an ornate relief fleur-de-lys, with intact suspension loop at the bottom of the same. Device: in a narrow device area, an 8-pointed star, separated from the legend by a line. Inscription reads + S'IOH'IS: IVSTICE: (The seal of John Justice). Separators are three stacked dots. Measurements: 20 mm x 34 mm, 4 mm thick. This piece's very small device area, together with its simple device, suggest that it may be of a relatively early date in the thirteenth century. The legend does not make it clear is whether th…

Item unseen, description based on photographs and information received. A vesica-shaped) pointed oval) lead seal with flat back and elongated suspension loop above. (Only impression seen; other details of description from owner) A substantial copper alloy vesica-shaped seal matrix in excellent condition. Reverse plain with raised central midrib and suspension loop at top of same. Device: rather short-legged mule walking from left to right. Seated astride it but with head and upper body turned towards the viewer, the Virgin Mary, holding the Child on her left arm. Piece unseen, description provided by owner. A lead, vesica-shaped (pointed ova) seal matrix with suspension loop at the top. Device of an elegant fleur-de-lys with two falling and three rising petals, the outer two of the latter with tips curling towards the central rising petal which has been reduced to a straight rod topped by a small fleur-de-lys in the upper point of the device space. The rod continues down the central axis of the vesica and terminates in a matching inverted fleur-de-lys in the bottom point of the central vesica. A single line defines the device space and a second…

A copper alloy, circular seal matrix with rear suspension loop. Device: the head of a clean-shaven man, facing left. He wears a hood, or possibly a coif and a hood over this. The "tail" of the hood is a long-necked bird, indicating that the man represented is a fool or jester. Device: at the bottom of the matrix a sleeping lion, head to the left, forelegs hidden under head. Body forms a curve, with the tail forming another curve below. A copper alloy seal matrix, circular face and hexagonal handle topped by damaged suspension loop, somewhat worn. Device of a long-eared hare riding a creature which is probably meant to be a hunting dog, walking left. The body of the "dog" is almost sheep-like and the head unclear; the legs end in three toes, in a manner not dissimilar to that seen on crude heraldic lions of the period. Hare holds a hunting bow in his paw, which is partially drawn; only the upper part of the bow is visible. Devcice separated from legend by a line. Measurements: 20 mm diameter face, 26 mm high.

Remains of a lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, now in three pieces. Although the matrix is very thin (when new, it would have been 2.5 mm thick, or more) and disintegrating, lettering still legible where present on face; reverse plain. Measurements: 0f pieces placed in their original relationship 21.5 mm x 26 mm, 1.5 mm thick.

A copper alloy, circular seal matrix, back with raised tapering midrib, at the top of which lies a neat suspension loop formed by the raised strip of metal which formed the midrib being folded back over itself. Complex device: within a beaded circle, a carefully-executed seated lion with a thick curly mane. Below him a horizontal bar with a snake twisting around it; above the lion's back, a bunch of eight or nine fleurs-de-lys. A raised circle encloses the beaded circle and separates it from the lettering area, which in turn has a beaded circle above and below the letters. The design i…

Recorded from impression and details supplied. A lead, vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, back unseen. The top of the matrix is distorted, making the initial cross and S' indistinct and difficult to see. Plain, flat back, fixing loop intact at top. Device of a dove-like singing bird. It appears to have two feet on the right-hand edge of the lettering/device boundary, suggesting that it may be better viewed by turning the matrix 90 degrees to the right. The bird is rather awkwardly engraved, as the legs are at an odd angle irrespective of the way it is viewed; the open beak is i…
