Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy section of decorated strip dating to the late Anglo-Saxon period (possibly around the 9th - 10th century). The function of this mount is unclear but it may be part of the binding for a box or book. The piece is rectangular and is broken at one end. At the other end the piece terminates with a zoomorphic animal head with a circular rivet hole at the very end. Above the rivet hole there are animal eyes. The rest of the mount has a long central panel decorated with a single line of ring and dot motifs. The panel of decoration is broken about two thirds of the way up the obje…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small broken thumbnail scraper. The scraper is formed from pale grey/honey coloured flint. It is roughly circular in shape and has fine working around the existing curved dorsal edge. The scraper appears to have had an edge broken off on the ventral surface so there is a ridge along this face. The scraper weighs 1.54g and measures 15.11mm in length, 13.82mm in width and 8.5mm in thickness.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint flake with fine retouch. The flake is roughly square shaped in plan and wedge shaped in profile. It is very similar in shape and size to the flints used in flintlock gun mechanisms although it is perhaps not uniform enough. A patch of cortex remains along one edge of the tool and there has been some fine retouch along the sharp/blade edge where the ‘wedge’ terminates. It is possible that the tool may have been used for scraping. It weighs 4.52g and measures 23.79mm in length, 20.29in width and 8.11mm in thickness.

Polished Neolithic axe head. The axe head is incomplete and has been heavily damaged although parts of the smooth polished surface remain intact. The butt of the axe head (where it would have been hafted) has some damage and may have been used as a tool itself at one stage. The blade end is also badly damaged with large pieces chipped away; none of the blade edge remains intact. The axe head has a slightly pointed oval section and is made from greenstone probably coming from the Great Langdale source in Cumbria. This Neolithic axe factory was in use from about 5,500 years ago and p…

A collection of 88 pieces of waste flint from tool knapping; this type of waste assemblage is difficult to date but is probably Mesolithic - early Neolithic in date. None of the pieces have any signs of retouch or working and as such are waste flakes and blades. The flint is mid-grey in colour and appears to be from the same source. A few of the pieces have a small amount of cortex but they are largely tertiary flakes. A number of worked pieces were found amongst the assemblage and these have been assigned separate PAS records: Related finds SWYOR – 96B4D2, 96F913, A5F6B4, A64390…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy, openwork artefact, possibly a mount of medieval date. It has four small circular domed lobes in a row attached to a larger openwork plate. The plate is trapezoidal in shape and is perforated with 18 small circular holes presumably for decoration and possibly so that the object can be sewn onto fabric. On the reverse the main plate is flat and the domed lobes are concave. These lobes are reminiscent of a type of decoration found on some early medieval strap ends. The object measures 39.48mm in length, 22.39mm in width, 5.12mm in thickness and weighs 11.4g.
