Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete Roman one-piece Colchester brooch. This cast copper alloy brooch is now dull brown in colour with patches of pale green corrosion. The rectangular wings are 18.63mm wide, and are slightly angled at the edges making them trapezoid in section. There is a worn break and corrosion at the end of the right wing. There is a loop extending from the centre of the head plate to hold the axis bar of the pin. The hinge and sprung pin are intact. There is a worn and corroded break on the bow, and the foot and catchplate are missing. The surviving section of the bow is a smooth curve and …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete Roman two-piece Colchester brooch. This cast copper alloy brooch is corroded with a cracked dull brown surface with patches of pale green corrosion showing through. The incomplete bow has a worn break and is a smooth, shallow curve with a missing foot and catchplate. There is a prominant raised rib running down the centre of the bow, flanked either side by a groove. This rib extends into a vertical lug, which is now broken as the upper perforation is missing its apex. This lug would have held the axis bar and the cord of the sprung pin, which is missing. The wings are rectan…

Microlith knapped from light grey to cream flint. The microlith has parallel edges and there are two parallel arrises on the dorsal surface. There is possibly a hinge fracture at the distal end, however this is unclear from the photograph. This microlith probably dates from the later Mesolithic. It is 13.33mm long, 5.75mm across at the widest point, has a maximum thickness of 1.2mm and weighs 0.11 grams.

Probably an incomplete blade of Mesolithic or early Neolithic date, knapped from light grey flint. The surviving section of the blade is the snapped proximal end. A curved proximal end is common on blades struck from prepared blade cores, with a punctiform butt; a small amount of the striking platform that remains on the removal. The roughly parallel scars on the dorsal surface also suggests that these are broken blades. The incomplete blade is 16.2mm long, 15.26mm across at the widest point, has a maximum thickness of 2.68mm and weighs 0.57 grams

Uncertain lithic implement, probably of Mesolithic or Neolithic date. The artefact has been knapped from dark grey flint with white specks. The flint has snapped, removing the distal end. It is possibly a fragment of a blade, however there are no dorsal blade scars, thus it is unlikely to have been removed from a prepared blade core. The form of the implement resembles a scraper, however the size of the artefact makes this unlikely. The fragment is 17.31mm long, 12.91mm across at the widest point, has a maximum thickness of 3.08mm and weighs 0.91 grams.
