Medieval copper alloy rectangular buckle plate. The plate is recessed for the buckle frame, which is missing. There are two parallel rivet holes in the corners furthest from the buckle frame to attach the plate to a leather belt. One of the rivet holes still containa an iron rivet. The other rivet hole has traces of gilding around the edge. The surface of the plate is decorated in a relief zoomorphic design, however the exact characteristics of the animal are unclear. The plate is worn and corroded, and has a light green patina with patches of red-brown showing through. The plate measu…

Medieval buckle loop cast in copper alloy. The buckle is incomplete as the strap bar and pin are missing. The remaining section of the frame is moulded of the front edge with two shallow semi-circular ridges either side of where the pin would rest, however the frame is not notched. There are possibly some incised oblique lines on the very worn frame. The frame has a dull black-green patina, with large areas covered in light green corrosion products. The remaining section of the buckle frame is 39.12mm long, 27.88mm wide and 4.91mm thick.

Medieval copper-alloy buckle. It has a D-shaped frame with offset narrowed bar, and an outside edge which swells smoothly to a thick, wide centre which is recessed for a separate roller. The narrow copper-alloy roller survives in place and is apparently undecorated. At the tapered ends of the loop, where it meets either end of the bar, there is a rounded lobe; the angle between lobe and loop appears to retain traces of gilding. Compare Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 270, which came from a late 12th-century context in London.

Copper-alloy spur buckle. It has a single sub-circular loop with pointed outer edge, and a copper-alloy pin surviving in the circular pin hole. The integral plate is wider around the pin hole before tapering to a waist, and then flaring very slightly to a rounded lobe; the edges are all bevelled. Single integral rivet on reverse. Traces of gilding. A similar buckle from London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 482) was found in an early 13th-century context.

An undecorated circular framed buckle made of copper-alloy. The measurements below relate to the circular frame of the brooch. The pin is still attached. The pin tapers to its terminal. The pin has been attached to the frame with a closed loop attachment. The shoulder of the pin has a decorative moulding on the upper surface of the pin at the junction of the loop and the shaft, just before it starts to taper to the terminal. The buckle is otherwise undecorated. The buckle is complete. The metal has a dark brownish-green patina. There are a few parallels in Egan and Pritchard, 19…

Cast copper alloy sub-triangular silvered buckle plate, decorated with ring and dot decoration. This plate is paralleled by an example in Mill Hill grave 63 (Parfitt and Brugmann 1995, 72, 139, 172, fig.35). This example was associated with an oval buckle loop with trapezoidal shield-on-tongue and was dated to the mid-to-late 6th century AD.

Cast copper alloy buckle with integral trapezoid plate. The semi-circular buckle loop terminates in open-jawed animal heads confronted across the hinge-bar. The buckle is somewhat worn, and no decoration is visible on the loop or plate. One of the two rivets on the end of the plate appears to have a copper alloy washer extant on the reverse. This is a continental import dating to the later 4th or early 5th century AD, and is an example of Hawkes and Dunnings' type IIIB (Hawkes and Dunning 1961). Type IIIB buckles are characterised by integral plates, and may be a post-Roman develop…

Cast copper alloy oval 'shield-on-tongue' buckle. The buckle is heavily corroded, and the strap bar is missing, the tongue being found nearby the loop. Both the loop and tongue retain traces of silver plating, as well as sections of iron corrosion that may indicate the buckle was deposited in contact with an iron object. This may indicate that the find derives from a disturbed burial. Shield-on-tongue buckles date to the 6th century AD.
