Copper alloy plate brooch, cast in the shape of an elongated bow. The brooch is complete with a copper alloy hinged pin and catchplate on the reverse. The surface of the brooch is highly corroded with traces of silvering or tinning on the front. The front of the brooch also has red-orange enamel, however there are no raised fields in which the enamel would have been contained. The design on the front of the brooch is unclear due to the level of corrosion. The reverse of the brooch is almost completely black in colour, with a small amount of copper showing through. The brooch is 34mm lo…

Complete cast copper alloy one piece Roman bow brooch of 1st century AD date. The brooch is worn has some slight pitting towards the base of the bow. It has a dull copper-brown patina, with slight corrosion on the spring and pin. It is possibly a variant of the Hod Hill type, which would date the brooch to 60-70AD (Hattatt 1987, p76). However, the brooch does not have any direct parallels in this class. It is more likely that the brooch is an example or variation of the continental 'Kraftig-profilierte' type. A brooch of a similar design can be seen in Crummy 1987, p10 no 37. The shap…

Cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon button-type or small saucer brooch. The brooch has an upturned rim and catchplate and hinge on the reverse. The spring and part of the pin survives as a lump of iron corrosion adhering to the hinge. The front of the brooch has relief decoration in the form of four elongated 'S' shapes set around a central beaded circle and dot. In style this brooch could be considered a small saucer brooch, with decoration related to the running spiral series, although its overall form and size (diameter 20mm) also relate it to the button brooch series.

Fragment of a Frankish silver gilt brooch. The fragment consists of the central, lozenge-shaped section of the foot-plate of a Frankish type of square-headed brooch. A plain border rib encloses the main panel of decoration, consisting of rounded, double-ridged chevrons on either side, and set at an angle to each other, with zones of ridges above and below, very similar to the decoration of a complete silver-gilt brooch from Trivières, Hainaut, Belgium. The latter belongs to Kühn's Rittersdorf type, which is distributed mainly in the Middle Rhineland, northern France and southern Bel…

A single perforated lug on the reverse of the headplate acted as the attachment for the iron spring and pin mechanism, which now survives only as a small area of iron corrosion. Worn transverse break at base of bow.
