Cast copper alloy mount. The mount is circular in plan and flat in section. One side is decorated with a moulded, slightly raised letter I entwined and passing through the centre bar of a letter S. Around the letters are irregular incised short dashes and lines, not quite cross-hatched, but used to fill the empty field around the central design. The reverse of the mount is plain. There are no signs of attachment to the reverse. The edges of the mount are irregular in places, but the object does appear to be mostly complete. The surface of the mount survives with an even mid green patin…

Fragment of cast copper-alloy Roman 'propeller-shaped' mount or belt stiffener. The fragment represents one of the flat triangular ends of the mount. One point of the triangle shows the straight break where it has become detached from the rest of the object; the break is worn, suggesting it occurred in antiquity. The front is decorated with a central raised longitudinal rib. A ring-and-dot motif is punched into each of the complete corners. There are two rivet holes, one to either side of the rib, complete with their copper-alloy rivets. The reverse of the fragment is undecorated. The …

Cast copper alloy late medieval or early post medieval mount. This mount is circular in plan and flat in section. It has a central circular perforation and was possibly attached by means of a rivet, now missing. The front of the mount is decorated with a double border of punched rectangles, 4mm apart that follow the circumference of the object. Within the central circular field created by the inner border, is further decoration in the form of two horizontal incised lines, with incised triangles flanking a semicircle above the upper line and three V shapes and a triangle beneath the…

Cast copper alloy mount, probably Late Iron Age or Early Roman. The mount is subrectangular in plan and teardrop shaped in section. It is pierced through its width with a circular perforation. Viewed with the pointed end down, the mount is moulded so that each outside edge is raised and slightly flared out. Between the raised edges at the top of the mount is a central raised triangle, recessed to take red glass or enamel, of which some traces survive. The downward point of the triangle extends into a substantial raised bevelled line that continues around the circumference of t…

Complete cast copper alloy object, probably a vessel escutcheon. The main body of the object is subtriangular in plan and concave in section. The bottom of the triangle expands into a curved, bulbous end, with the same section, with this portion set at an angle of 45 degrees to the main body. Extending from the opposite end of the subtriangular body is an irregular neck, perhaps once rectangular in plan, which is flat in section, set at an angle of approximately 10 degrees to the main body. Extending transverse from this neck is a subcircular loop with a pointed decorative knop to its …

Incomplete post medieval mount, probably from a sword belt. The mount would once have consisted of a rectangular frame with a circular loop set to the bottom of one long edge. Extending from the top short edge of the frame would have been an integral wasted neck, set with a central rivet, above which would be a decorative sub circular knop, with serrated edges, with a central circular perforation. What remains now is one short end of the loop with the wasted neck, with central copper alloy rivet intact, and the serrated sides of the knop. The top of the knop is missing, as is the rest …

Complete, cast copper alloy medieval or post medieval mount. The mount is formed from a main body portion that is lozenge shaped in plan and subrectangular in section. It is pierced with a circular rivet hole and the copper alloy rivet still survives. The main body extends down into a narrowed integral shank that then curls up and back towards the main body of the mount, so that the blunt tip is touching. Halfway along the shank, before it curls, are two integral semicircular knops. The object is abraded and the original surface survives only in patches with a dark brown patina. Expose…

Incomplete copper alloy post-medieval mount. The mount is sublozenge shaped in plan, with a constricted ‘waist’ and the lower triangular portion being narrower than the top triangular portion. At the centre of the upper portion is a raised copper alloy oval knop within a rope-style integral border. The mount is worn, but globular knops and a raised motif (now mostly illegible) can be seen at the edges and the lower point. The reverse of the mount is plain, and barely concave. The two integral shanks have been truncated, and little of their length remains. The object is abraded and …

A pair of medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic mounts. Though in differing states of survival, these mounts are almost identical. They were found within close proximity to each other. Mount 1: The mount takes the form of a beast, probably a lion, advancing right. It is looking back over its shoulder with its mouth open and has the tip of its tail between its jaws. The two front legs are slightly truncated, otherwise the mount is complete. The chest and neck of the animal are moulded with vertical lines, now almost worn to nothing. Across the chest, above the fore legs, is a diagona…

Fragment of Anglo-Saxon metalwork. This fragment appears to be complete. It is triangular in plan and flat in section. The front face is decorated with a geometric pattern. This is essentially a broad border that runs along the length of the two short sides. Within each side of the border is a raised double lined zig zag forming two peaks, with a third triangle formed from a single raised line that spirals in on its self at the apex of the two short sides. In the triangular shaped gap created by the border, is a thick, fairly crude raised lines that follow the line of the peak. There …

Complete copper alloy mount. The mount is circular in plan and flat in section. It has an openwork design of a central open, rounded-end cross, with an open rounded triangle set slightly back from each angle. Two circular shanked copper alloy rivets survive. One, which still moves freely within the hole, and one that is fixed. The fixed rivet head is flush with the mount, so evidence for the hole is almost invisible. The shank of the rivet protrudes from the reverse side of the mount. The front of the mount is abraded, but appears to be plain. The surface has a mid green patina, with p…

It is moulded to the front with three raised irregular globular knops, a larger central knop flanked by two smaller, one of which is very slight. The object is very worn and it is impossible to tell what these knops may have once represented, though it is clear some design was intended. Around the knops is a raised moulded border, otherwise the mount is plain. The abraded surface is mostly dark green, but pitted and exposed surfaces are now light green. Cast copper alloy mount. This mount is domed in section with a stepped broad base. It is plain. The reverse of the mount has a dark brown stain, which is probably the remains of the fixing shank. The stain is not magnetic, suggesting that this shank was probably copper alloy, not iron. Orangey brown corrosion can also be seen around the dark brown stain on the reverse. Otherwise the original surface of the object survives in patches with an even mid green patina. Exposed surfaces are lighter green. Given other finds from the vicinity, this mount is probably Roman in date. It is 19.94mm…

Incomplete cast copper alloy roman mount. The mount was once figure of eight in plan, but is now broken, so that one end loop is incomplete. It has a flat reverse and domed, moulded front. The mount is formed from two opposing crescents, back to back, which terminate in broad trumpet heads. An integral loop then spans the opposing trumpet heads at either end to form the end loops of the figure of eight. The ends of the trumpet heads are raised ridges. Cast copper alloy mount. The mount is semicircular in plan and flat in section. When viewed with the straight edge upper most, the front face is decorated with a raised design of two left chasing spirals that extend into the curved field. Alternatively it could also be described as an incised overly curled ‘S’ shape viewed horizontally on its back. Around the spirals, the field of the mount is recessed, possibly to hold enamel. There are no traces of additional material to confirm or deny this theory. The reverse of the mount is unevenly tinned and this extends onto the edges of th…

Incomplete cast copper alloy mount, probably of Roman date. The mount is circular in plan and flat in section. It has an upturned flanged rim, set at 90 degrees to the main disc of the mount. This provides a recess within which enamel would have been set. Nothing of the enamel remains. A tiny patch of black material may be enamel, though without testing this premise is inconclusive. Set within the centre of the recessed area are six copper alloy , short circular sectioned shafts, spaced evenly around a central shaft, no more than 1.8mm in diameter. When filled with enamel, these knops …
