An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Dragonesque brooch. The fragment comprises about two thirds of the brooch. This type of brooch is essentially Celtic in design but is Roman made and continued to be made until the end of the 1st century AD. The brooch has a raised surface and the overall form is that of and ā€˜Sā€™ shaped, double-headed animal with large ears and a curled snout. The snout on this example curls right back onto the top of the head creating a circular hole through which the pin would have been. The remaining head has a raised pointed oval shaped ear. The centre of the b…

Polished Neolithic adze head. The adze is incomplete and has been heavily damaged although parts of the smooth polished surface remain intact. The butt of the adze (where it would have been hafted) has broken away and may have been used as a tool itself at one stage. The blade end also displays damage and there are large chips missing from the edges of the tool. Unlike an axe blade, the adze has a blunter edge. The adze head has a slightly pointed oval section and is made from a hard, fine greeny grey stone. This is possibly greenstone from the Great Langdale source in Cumbria. This N…

Small copper alloy loop, probably the handle attachment or lug from a chafing dish of Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (about AD 1400 to AD 1600). A sub circular hole is present in the oval end, through which the handle would have been located. This object was originally identified as possibly from the top of a medieval purse bar frame. The object weighs 12.65g and measures 22.9mm in length, 14.4mm in width and 9mm in thickness. Comp…

There is a dot between the two arms of the V implying it is an abbreviation, as is the B. There is no way of knowing exactly what the abbreviation stands for but it is possibly something like 'deo volente' (God willing).

The ducks bill droops down the back of the man's neck. The legend on the seal is quite worn and difficult to decipher; it seems to be set between beaded lines. Copper alloy medieval heraldic horse harness pendant. The pendant is shield shaped (suggesting a late 13th - early 14th century date) and is decorated on the front surface. The pendant has a blue enamel ground and a 'bend cotised (between two narrower bends) between six lioncels rampant' . Unfortunately all the gilding on the pendant has been lost, however this distinctive design was only used by one family in the medieval period - the de Bohuns. The lack of gilding means that the pendant cannot be assigned to an individual family member. The de Bohuns were a large family who used sev…
