Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount, of Williams Class B. The stirrup strap mount is very worn, but is of an openwork design, with three pairs of apertures and an angled flange which projects backwards from the distal end. The remains of an iron rivet are present in the flange's left fixing hole, but the other fixing hole is incomplete. The upper fixing hole is also missing. The closest parallel in David Williams' Late Saxon-Stirrup Strap Mounts, is no. 504 (p. 104, fig. 64). This example, from Dorset, is better preserved and is decorated with animal heads.

Cast silver-gilt spoon knob. It is of the 'maidenhead' type, comprising the head and shoulders of a lady with long hair. She rises from a calyx of leaves. Long hair depicts virginity, hence the term 'maidenhead' spoon. Traces of gilding appear on many parts of the spoon handle. It is in good condition and broke from the body of the spoon cleanly at the join, leaving a stepped edge. It is late 16th to early 17th century in date. Cast gold ingot of roughly D-shaped section. A slightly larger but similarly shaped example from Liddington, Wiltshire was declared to be Treasure and is featured in the Treasure Annual Report 1998-9. One datable associated find of ingots of this type is from Mooghaun, Co. Clare, where other items in the hoard are known to date to the Late Bronze Age (the ingots are missing but there are casts). A small Late Bronze Age hoard from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Denbighshire contained a similar example of comparable size to the Wembury find. The simplicity of the form and the lack of archaeolog…

Copper alloy Iron Age brooch. It is in very good condition and comprises a three-spoked wheel placed just off centre of the bow.
