Small glass vessel (unguentaria, phial or flask) of Roman date (100 – 200 AD). The flask is relatively squat with a sub rectangular shaped body and irregular shaped expanding neck / funnel. The base of the flask is flat but slightly sloped. There is a large concave indentation present on the base; this is due to the manufacturing / blowing process. Each of the four sides of the flask have a small oval indentation, presumably to allow the liquid to be applied in controlled drops. The glass walls of the flask are relatively thick with a large number air inclusions; these are in the sha…

Cast copper alloy fragment from a key (handle) of Roman date (50-300AD). The fragment consists of the junction between the iron shank and the handle; as well as part of the ornamental openwork handle. The key fragment is irregular in plan and profile. The junction with the iron shaft is sub rectangular in both plan and profile. Each of the four faces is decorated with a series of four horizontal cast bands. Much of the decoration is encased in orange corrosion. This junction is presumably hollow and the key shank would have fitted within the copper alloy handle. Part of the iron shank …

Alexandrian billon tetradrachm (i.e. a base silver 4 drachma coin struck in Alexandria in Egypt). These coins were issued under the Roman emperors for (roughly) the first 3 centuries AD, getting progressively baser and smaller. These coins usually have the bust of an emperor (occasionally a wife or son) on the obverse and assorted Classical or Egyptianising themes on the reverse. They exist because the emperors treated Egypt like a private estate and it kept its own currency system right through to the 290's

Incomplete segment of a snapped flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. It measures 31.4mm length, 18.1mm width, is 9.5mm (max) thick and weighs 5.25 grams. The flint probably consists of the central or lower part of the blade; however, modern damage has obscured the detail which would enable positive confirmation of this. The bulb of percussion is not present however the initial ripples caused by the striking of the blade are clear on the reverse of the flake. The upper end of the bl…

Rim sherd of a thick walled platter or bowl probably dating from the post medieval period (1550-1650). The sherd is irregular in plan and curved in profile. The fabric is a hard fired earthen ware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, sand and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is two-tone, the outer a mid orange brown and the inner a mid grey. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of this type of post medieval pottery. The exterior and possibly the interior surface has a light-mid green (copper?) shiny glaze (also know…
