An incomplete lead-alloy object of probable Roman date, but uncertain function. The piece appears to be a fragment from a circular disc and is similar in style to a number of Roman objects including circular mounts (see N.Crummy, 1983, p118-9) and 2nd century disc brooches (see R. Hattatt, 2000, p. 345-346). At the centre of the upper surface is a raised circular cell (now empty) and, extending outwards from this, a series of concentric grooves. The reverse is uneven and has no sign of a rivet or other means of attachment. The object measures 16mm long by 14.7mm wide and 1.…

Cast copper alloy terminal, possibly from a penannular brooch or a buckle frame. The terminal is oval in cross section before the flat sub-rectangular end. The broken end of the terminal is slightly offset and wider than the rest of the fragment. The fragment is worn on all surfaces, including the break. The even green patina is suggestive of a Roman date. The fragment is 24.35mm long, 4.91mm wide, 2.78mm thick and weighs 2.06 grams.

The function of the object is not certain. It is made from cast copper alloy with an iron core, and is either a fragment or an incomplete object. The object is a sub-conical, with two wide horizontal grooves towards the lower edge. In section, it is a sub-circle, but one face is slightly flattened. Protruding off-centre through the copper alloy portion is a circular sectioned rod. This rod is 4mm in diameter. The object has a well developed mid green patina. It measures 17.4mm long, 9.21mm wide and 8.88mm thick. It weighs 4.2g The object is possibly of a Roman or Medieval date, due …

AThe function of the object is not certain. It is made from cast copper alloy, and is either a fragment or an incomplete object. The object has two integral components, firstly a flat sub-circular disc with a circular hole in the centre. Protruding from the lower edge, and flush with the reverse of the disc is an elongated trapezoidal rod. The lower edge of this rod is broken, and is not a recent break. The lower portion of the rod, in profile, is curved, the upper portion is straight. In section the rod is sub-rectangular with the upper corners being rounded. The upper face is decorat…

An incomplete cast copper alloy disc, probably Roman in date. Half of the circular disc survives with a diameter of 38mm. The break across the disc is worn. The front of the disc has five incised lines around a central circular perforation measuring 5mm across. The reverse of the disc is plain, and there are no fittings attached. The disc has a dull brown patina with some pitting on the surface caused by corrosion. A similar artefact (record SF-7F9C65) was found in Suffolk, and another in Yorkshire (PUBLIC-150902). There are several possible identifications for this artefact, but …

An incomplete copper-alloy unidentified object which may be Roman in date. This object consists of a circular terminal with the remains of sides projecting from one face. It is 17.5mm in diameter and 8.6mm in thickness The complete terminal has a recessed centre which may be a hollow and is filled with a white material which is likely to have acted as a cement to hold a stone or gem of some sort. Traces of this white material can be seen on the other face, it therefore seems likely that this object was originally hollow and this part of it filled with the white material. No parallel…

The function of the object is unidentified. It appears to be a type of decorative fitting, made from cast copper alloy. Overall, the object is a moulded circular sectioned stem that gradually increased in diameter towards another terminal. All the components are integral to each other rather than composite. The first component, at the narrow terminal is a bulbous knop, which is seated above a narrowed conical. All the conical shapes have concave sides. This is then seated on a wider bi-convex asymmetrical disc, which again is seated on another narrowed concave-sided conical. This is a…

Cast copper alloy unidentified object, probably either a stylus or a pin, of unknown date. The artefact is broadly rectangular in plan and oval in cross section. It measures 67.7mm length, 8.2mm width (max), is 7.1 mm thick (max) and weighs 10.34 grams. The description of the pin / stylus can be divided into three parts: the first part is an ornamental terminal / knop which is sub-spherical with a single cast line around the circumference. The top of the sphere / knop is decorated with incised radial lines. Below this terminal is a cylindrical section / body with a wide waste and narro…

A broken copper-alloy object of uncertain function. The object is very likely to be of Roman date judging from its form and patina. The object has a circular base from which stems a shaft, circular in section. The base of the object measures 19.8 mm in diameter and the shaft is 7 mm thick. The shaft has a decorative rib which is broken, but appears to have once been hexagonal in shape. The shaft is broken at its top, just above an incised line which runs around it, and it is unclear how the artefact would have developed from here. The base has the remains of what is a possible solder o…

Cast cu-alloy object, probably casting residue from the crucible. Approximately 50% are unrecognisable, but the remaining arch resembles the bow of a Colchester one-piece fibula of the 1st century AD. Most of the spring coil is molten, but the part that crossed the head terminal of the bow is still in place(?). The other end of the bow terminates rather abruptly. This could have been a casting flaw and thus the reason why the brooch re-entered the recycling process.

The object is made from cast copper alloy. The function is, yet unknown. In plan it is an elongated sub rectangle, which tapers slightly towards a terminal. Both terminals appear to be broken, but these are not recent breaks, as the patina covers them. The base is flat and undecorated. The profile of the object is rectangular and maintains a continuous depth of 2.7mm. The upper surface is decorated with blocks of ribbing, which are perpendicular to the long edges of the object. Between the ribbing, the object is undecorated except at the edges where a shallow low-relief pointed oval or…

A worn fragment from a cast tin object seemingly depicting an anthropomorphic face. The 'eyes' are conjoining and heavily bordered. The 'nose' is triangular, while the 'mouth' is damaged. It is extremely difficult to accurately date such a fragment or to suggest an original context or use. The possibility exists that the face is more illusory than real. There are very slight traces on the reverse which hint at gilding.
